<\/p>\n\t\t\tRugby Europe has completed the latest stage of its National Team Strength & Conditioning (S&C) Program, bringing together coaches from across the continent to raise performance standards and prepare national squads for the upcoming 7s Series. <\/p>\n
This initiative marks another step in the broader strategic effort to elevate player welfare, improve medical standards, and ensure European teams are physically ready for the demands of international competition.Growing Commitment Across Europe<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s cohort included 15 participants from 14 Rugby Europe unions, each recognising the increasing need to invest in specialist conditioning staff. The programme reflects a noticeable attitude shift across participating unions, many of which are prioritising improved welfare systems and structured physical preparation as key components of high\u2011performance success.<\/p>\n
The blended learning format\u2014three virtual education sessions followed by a three\u2011day in\u2011person programme\u2014has been designed to give coaches both conceptual knowledge and hands\u2011on, practical insight. Participants will now receive ongoing mentoring as they start applying these principles while preparing their national teams for the upcoming tournament schedule.<\/p>\n
Learning from a High\u2011Performance Culture<\/p>\n
A major focus of the in\u2011person segment was understanding the cultural shift undertaken by the Federazione Italiana Rugby (F.I.R.)\u00a0in recent years, particularly in how they prepare players from pathway to senior level. Italy\u2019s investment in consistent high\u2011performance standards has become a strong case study for emerging unions across Europe.<\/p>\n

Participants were given a rare behind\u2011the\u2011scenes look at how elite teams operate. This included observing the Italian U20s squad\u00a0during their training week, as well as sessions led by S&C coaches from Zebre Parma\u00a0and Ulster Rugby, who shared their planning processes before participants attended a URC fixture to see those programmes in action.<\/p>\n
These experiences provided context, realism, and a clear demonstration of what an aligned and well\u2011structured performance system can look like.<\/p>\n
A Foundation for Safer, Better Rugby<\/p>\n
Speaking about the objectives of the programme, Charlie Brown, Rugby Europe Regional Training Manager, said:<\/p>\n
\u201cOur hope is that this investment helps further reduce injuries, improves the physical preparation and on\u2011field performance of participating unions, and builds stronger buy\u2011in across Europe. The passion from the coaches is already there\u2014now it\u2019s about giving them the tools, knowledge, and support to raise standards in their home environments.\u201d<\/p>\n
With many unions still developing domestic S&C structures, this programme serves as a catalyst for long\u2011term growth. Improved welfare and performance standards rely on both qualified staff and a system that values and supports their work. Rugby Europe aims to continue strengthening this foundation in the coming seasons.<\/p>\n
