\n\tGird your loins:\u00a0Meryl Streep<\/a> and Anna Wintour<\/a> have teamed up for Vogue<\/a>\u2018s latest cover story<\/a>, ahead of the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe conversation<\/a>, moderated by Barbie and Little Women filmmaker Greta Gerwig (who is also directing Streep in her Netflix Narnia adaptation), was published on Tuesday, alongside photos of Streep and Wintour posing together in a private car and corporate elevator at a Runway-esque office.<\/p>\n

\n\tFans of the original 2006 film will know that Streep\u2019s ice-cold magazine boss, Miranda Priestly, is loosely based on Wintour, who was editor-in-chief of American Vogue from 1988 to 2025. The Briton does acknowledge it\u2019s \u201can honor\u201d to be played by Streep \u2014\u00a0\u201chowever distant Miranda is from myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the top of the interview, Gerwig asks about how we can present ourselves through fashion. \u201cFor men, there\u2019s a clear code: You dress for the job you want. But for women, dressing has always been more nebulous\u2026 Do you think about how women are meant to dress to communicate power?\u201d she poses to the two women.<\/p>\n

\n\tWintour downplays needing to wear a suit to feel powerful and immediately cites Michelle Obama as an example, as well as New York\u2019s new first lady, Rama Duwaji, wife of Zohran Mamdani. \u201cI\u2019m full of admiration for [Duwaji] because she looks so cool and wears a lot of vintage \u2014 young and modern and also entirely herself. To be fair, Melania Trump<\/a> also always looks like herself when she dresses,\u201d adds the fashion mogul.<\/p>\n

\n\tStreep jumps in, saying, \u201cI have so many thoughts about this. I think the most\u2026 powerful message that our current first lady sent was in the coat that said \u2018I Really Don\u2019t Care, Do U?\u2019 when she was going to see migrant children who were incarcerated. All dress is about expressing yourself, but we\u2019re also subject to larger historical and political sweeps of expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n

What happens when you put Meryl Streep and Anna Wintour\u2014the two Mirandas, as it were\u2014in a room together? A wide-ranging conversation about fashion, family, friendship, and yes, the forthcoming sequel to \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m stunned at how women in power have to have bare arms on television while men are covered in shirts and ties or a suit. There\u2019s an apology built into women. They have to show their smallness,\u201d the Oscar winner adds.<\/p>\n

\n\tMelania Trump visited the New Hope Children\u2019s Shelter in McAllen, Texas, in Trump\u2019s first term, and later told the press that the jacket was\u00a0\u201cfor the people and for the left-wing media who are criticising me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAlso in the interview, Wintour lauds Streep for her acting prowess, and admitted to feeling unsure when she heard The Devil Wears Prada 2 was a-go. \u201cWhen I heard rumors that this new film might be happening, I called Meryl to ask if it was true. I knew she would tell me if it was going to be all right,\u201d says Wintour. \u201cShe hadn\u2019t yet read the script, so she said she\u2019d call me back. And that\u2019s what she did. She read the script. She called me back and said, \u2018Anna, I think it\u2019s going to be all right.\u2019 She told me very little about what happens in the film, but I trusted her implicitly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe women agree that being 76 years of age is an advantage in today\u2019s world \u2014\u00a0\u201cI can definitely say that from being on set with Meryl, everybody sits up a little straighter when you\u2019re\u00a0there,\u201d adds Gerwig \u2014 though with that experience comes inevitable loss. The filmmaker asks Streep about the deaths of her frequent collaborators Mike Nichols and Robert Redford.<\/p>\n

\n\tStreep replies, touching her chest: \u201cMike is so here. That\u2019s the great consolation of getting older. It\u2019s unbearable when every week somebody\u2019s dying that I love, but you realize, \u2018Okay, you\u2019ve got to swallow her. You\u2019ve got to swallow him. You\u2019ve got to have all of them. They are in here, you\u2019re going to use them, and they\u2019re going to live.\u2019 The indelible people don\u2019t go. We don\u2019t lose people. We keep them and they keep working.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe women then bond over being grandmothers \u2014\u00a0Streep to six under age 6, and Wintour to four, as well as four step-grandchildren \u2014\u00a0and balancing their work alongside family time: \u201cIt\u2019s just grabbing seconds, just grabbing everything you can of them, with the knowledge of how completely fleeting it all is and how rapidly time goes,\u201d says Streep.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe interview rounds off by discussing what we can expect from a new era for Andy (Anne Hathaway), Emily (Emily Blunt), and Nigel (Stanley Tucci) in DWP2, with Streep saying Miranda is \u201cless worried about what anybody thinks\u201d in regard to her style.<\/p>\n

\n\tGerwig asks about her comments on the first film \u2014\u00a0that she felt \u201cas if you couldn\u2019t quite hang out with them the way that they could hang out with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOh, they all had a fabulous time,\u201d responds Streep. \u201cAnd I felt like I had to have some distance. I do like a hang, I mean, that\u2019s almost how you pick the things, like, \u2018How good is the hang going to be?\u2019 But I really consciously pulled back, and I was sitting in my trailer just miserable the whole time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGerwig responds: \u201cWhen we had a wrap party for\u00a0Narnia,\u00a0I realized nobody wanted me there. I was like, \u2018Nobody can have any fun as long as I\u2019m there,’\u201d before Wintour says: \u201cI know that feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStreep adds that the film is \u201creal and triumphant.\u201d The Devil Wears Prada 2 hits theaters May 1.<\/p>\n
