Based on these challenges, deeper research is needed on exercise approaches that simultaneously train cognition and movement.<\/p>\n<p>On February 11, 2026, researchers from Beijing Normal University, Beijing Sport University, Xuzhou Rehabilitation Hospital affiliated with Xuzhou Medical University, and Peking University Sixth Hospital\u00a0published a study in\u00a0World Journal of Pediatrics\u00a0showing that a 12-week integrated cognitive-motor exercise program reduced core ADHD symptoms in children and produced stronger improvements in inhibitory control and immediate working memory than aerobic exercise alone, pointing to a promising non-pharmacological strategy for more comprehensive ADHD management.<\/p>\n<p>This multicenter trial enrolled 107 children with ADHD aged 6 to 10 and assigned them to one of three groups for 12 weeks: integrated cognitive-motor exercise, aerobic exercise, or a wait-list control. While physical exercise is a promising non-pharmacological intervention, the efficacy of integrating cognitive demands with physical activity remains underexplored.<\/p>\n<p>This trial compared the effects of integrated cognitive-motor exercise, aerobic exercise, and a minimal intervention on core symptoms and executive functions (EFs) in children with ADHD.<\/p>\n<p>Methods<\/p>\n<p>In this randomized, controlled, multicenter trial, 107 children with ADHD (aged 6\u201310\u00a0years) were allocated to one of three groups for 12\u00a0weeks: (1) integrated cognitive-motor exercise (EG1,\u00a0n\u2009=\u200936); (2) aerobic exercise (EG2,\u00a0n\u2009=\u200935); or (3) wait-list control (CG,\u00a0n\u2009=\u200936). Both EG1 and EG2 performed their respective interventions three times per week in 45-minute sessions.<\/p>\n<p>The primary outcomes were inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms and EFs (inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility). The analysis followed the intention-to-treat principle with linear mixed models.<\/p>\n<p>Results<\/p>\n<p>Compared with the CG, both exercise groups presented significant, comparable reductions in inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms (all\u00a0P\u2009\u2264\u20090.01). However, EG1 demonstrated superior improvements in specific EFs. For inhibitory control (Stroop color-word interference), EG1 resulted in a significantly greater reduction in color-word interference time than both EG2 [\u03b2\u2009=\u2009\u2212\u00a06.24, 95% confidence interval (CI)\u2009=\u2009\u2212\u00a012.28 to \u2212\u00a00.20,\u00a0P\u2009=\u20090.045] and CG (\u03b2\u2009=\u2009\u2212\u00a013.97, 95% CI\u2009=\u2009\u2212\u00a019.97 to \u2212\u00a07.97,\u00a0P\u2009&lt;\u20090.001).<\/p>\n<p>For immediate working memory, the improvement in EG1 was greater than that in both EG2 (\u03b2\u2009=\u20092.09, 95% CI\u2009=\u20090.33\u20133.85,\u00a0P\u2009=\u20090.032) and CG (\u03b2\u2009=\u20093.57, 95% CI\u2009=\u20091.83\u20135.31,\u00a0P\u2009&lt;\u20090.001). Both exercise groups improved similarly in cognitive flexibility compared with the CG. Parental satisfaction was significantly greater in EG1 than in EG2 (P\u2009&lt;\u20090.001). No adverse events were reported.<\/p>\n<p>Conclusions<\/p>\n<p>A structured integrated cognitive-motor exercise intervention is an effective and safe non-pharmacological treatment for children with ADHD.
