The Warriors will be without Adam Pompey for two weeks after the centre failed to overturn his ban at the NRL<\/a> judiciary on Tuesday night and it raises an ‘unfair’ rule some in the game have called to change<\/a>. Warriors fans were left in disbelief after Pompey was handed a one-game ban for raising his knee going into a tackle against Briton Nikora in the loss to the Sharks.<\/p>\n

The incident went largely unnoticed at the time, but Nikora came from the field clutching at his nose. The Match Review Committee looked at the incident after the game and handed Pompey a one-game ban.<\/p>\n

The Warriors opted to fight the charge knowing if they failed it would get upgraded to a two-game suspension for their centre. And the club failed on Tuesday night with Pompey now sitting out the next two games against the Melbourne Storm and the Titans.<\/p>\n

Warriors fans are frustrated considering Pompey is the first player to have chosen to fight his charge and fail at the judiciary in 2026. This comes after Nathan Cleary was able to get off his two-game ban<\/a> when Ivan Cleary represented the Panthers halfback ahead of the season. This has raised questions around the NRL judiciary system with Melbourne Storm boss Justin Rodski previously asking why players should fight the charge considering they can have their ban upgraded.<\/p>\n

The Melbourne Storm were facing a dilemma last year when they accepted a two-game ban for captain Harry Grant<\/a> after Round 25 instead of going to the judiciary. If they had of failed at the judiciary, Grant would have been rubbed out of the first week of the finals.<\/p>\n

Instead he missed the final two games of the regular season and was back in time for the start of the playoffs. Although Rodski felt the system needed a re-jig because it wasn’t fair for players to take the extra risk ahead of big games.<\/p>\n

“What I’d like to see is a review of the judiciary system around the way that a player is unable to challenge to downgrade a charge without risking the harsh penalty of an additional game,” Rodski told AAP last year. “The grading is an incentive to not challenge, but at the same time it’s not a fair reflection of natural justice.<\/p>\n

“While I understand and appreciate why it’s been set up that way … and I agree with the early plea in principle. The problem with the system now is that when you have an instance like this, surely the player should be able to challenge to have the charge downgraded and not risk such a heavy penalty. For any player at any club, to miss a final off the back of challenging that downgrade, it’s not worth it.”<\/p>\n

Nathan Cleary escapes NRL ban<\/p>\n

The rule hasn’t been changed in 2026 with both Pompey and Cleary taking the risk this year at the judiciary. However, it worked in favour of the Penrith Panthers halfback. Warriors coach Andrew Webster will now need to look at who comes in for Pompey having already re-shuffled the backline a number of times this season.
