The long wait for many players and fans is over this weekend as\u00a0Round 1 of Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 Football approaches.<\/p>\n
Teams will be aiming to join Reservoir at the top of the table, with the Mustangs already clinching a big win over Lalor in the Good Friday game at Crispe Park which kicked off the season.<\/p>\n
Kinglake and Kilmore\u00a0battle it out for the Country Cup at Kinglake Memorial Oval.\u00a0\u00a0These clashes are\u00a0generally evenly\u00a0matched and keenly contested.\u00a0Adding to the spice this time\u00a0is the\u00a0fact\u00a0that the Blues defeated the Lakers in an elimination final thriller last season in an amazing score line of 5.4-34 to 2.17-29 at Main Street Reserve in Thomastown.<\/p>\n
Kinglake fans will fancy their chances on their home deck and hope that Dave Florance has his team more\u00a0accurate\u00a0in front of\u00a0goal.<\/p>\n
Kilmore goes into the season\u00a0under\u00a0new coach\u00a0Corey McCall.\u00a0McCall led Watsonia to a\u00a0Division 3 flag in 2016\u00a0and\u00a0has\u00a0coached in\u00a0the Western Football Netball League.\u00a0\u00a0Blues fans will be hoping for a repeat of their 2025 finals win.<\/p>\n
Epping and\u00a0Mernda\u00a0face off at Epping Recreational Reserve.\u00a0These teams clashed in the first semi-final in 2024, with the Demons recording an easy 34-point triumph.<\/p>\n
Despite having lofty ambitions, both sides missed the finals last season and will be keen to begin their campaigns with a victory.\u00a0Brad Hollow\u2019s men will go into the match with some confidence that they can win on their home deck to open the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Brent Marshall took over as coach of\u00a0Mernda\u00a0late in the 2025 season and has now had an entire pre-season to prepare his charges for\u00a0what appears to be a\u00a0good challenge first up.<\/p>\n
Heidelberg West hosts Old Eltham Collegians\u00a0at Heidelberg Park in an intriguing contest.\u00a0\u00a0These sides have, at times, been battling it out for the final spot in the finals and have had some great tussles over the years.<\/p>\n
Last\u00a0year began with\u00a0the Hawks\u00a0defeating\u00a0the Turtles by\u00a035\u00a0points\u00a0at this venue.\u00a0The promising start to the season\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0become a\u00a0finals\u00a0appearance and Old Eltham Collegians won the return bout in round 13 at Eltham College to the tune of 12\u00a0points.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Michael\u00a0Missen\u00a0returns to take charge of Heidelberg West, having last coached them in 2023.<\/p>\n
After coaching Panton Hill\u00a0Under\u00a019s, Stewart McCallum takes over as the new coach of the Turtles.\u00a0With both teams looking to climb the ladder after disappointing 2025 seasons, this shapes\u00a0as\u00a0a fascinating tussle.\u00a0Looking on will be the Ivanhoe coaching staff\u00a0\u2013 the Hoers have the\u00a0Round 1 bye with an upcoming match against Heidelberg West in\u00a0Round 2.<\/p>\n
Rounding out the opening week of matches, Laurimar hosts Watsonia\u00a0at Laurimar Reserve. Both teams are\u00a0previous\u00a0Division 3 premiers.\u00a0The Saints achieved this feat in 2016, while the Power triumphed more recently in 2023.<\/p>\n
This will be the first meeting between these two combatants. Watsonia has been in\u00a0Division 2 since\u00a02017,\u00a0and that year was Laurimar\u2019s debut was a senior team.<\/p>\n
The Power will be viewed by many as the number one seed for the 2026 season.\u00a0They made the grand final last year and were the only team to defeat the Fitzroy Stars for the entire season. Coach Jimmy Atkins will be aiming to quickly return to\u00a0Division\u00a02\u00a0and their loyal fans will be expecting a win at home first up.<\/p>\n
Watsonia coach Anthony McGregor will also be aiming for a short stay in Division 3.
