Director David Lowery drew inspiration from Taylor Swift\u2019s Reputation<\/a> tour for Mother Mary<\/a>, an art-house drama about a pop star (Anne Hathaway) on the eve of her comeback performance. What\u2019s more Rep than that? \u201cHer\u00a0Reputation\u00a0concert film<\/a> is one of the best concert films ever,\u201d he told\u00a0Empire<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s truly phenomenal. And for our concert sequences we looked at that repeatedly. You would not believe the amount of time we were talking about Taylor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lowery transformed into a Swiftie throughout the production of the film, analyzing individual performances from the concert to determine how to budget for a concert film within a full-length film. \u201cWe took three songs from\u00a0Reputation\u00a0and broke it down, shot by shot, and looked at them like, \u2018Okay, if we were doing these, how much would these shots cost to do in visual effects?\u2019\u201d he continued. \u201cWe used that as a budgeting tool, because we didn\u2019t know how to wrap our heads around actually pulling off a stadium concert show on a minimal budget. We were literally using\u00a0Reputation\u00a0as a guide. I can go on about\u00a0Reputation\u00a0all day.\u201d Hathaway even gave him an \u201cAnti-Hero\u201d bracelet as a wrap gift, since they both went to the Eras Tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Hathaway\u2019s character, Mother Mary, is Lowery\u2019s vision for what a Taylor Swift\u2013like figure would be in the future. He added, \u201cI definitely brought a lot of Taylor Swift to the table in terms of who Mother Mary was. I would often would be like, \u2018Imagine Taylor Swift in ten or 15 years \u2014 that\u2019s sort of who this character could be.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
