(Supplied: James Venning.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Venning planted canola in the week leading up to Easter, which runs the risk of flowering during times of frost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s the earliest we&#8217;ve ever started by at least two weeks, nearly three,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a little bit of a risk, but I thought, given the moisture, and generally speaking, canola, the earlier sown the better it is, but this is unprecedented territory, really.&#8221;How are rising fuel costs or supply issues affecting you or your business?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-13\/audience-callout-iran-fuel-oil-supply\/106451538\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106451538\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Share your insights to help inform our journalism.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Risk of going early<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Grain Producers SA chief executive Brad Perry said most growers traditionally started seeding around Anzac Day and into May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think this is one of the most challenging periods I&#8217;ve seen for grain producers making business decisions, because there are so many unknowns at the moment,&#8221; Mr Perry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;One of the positives is the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-01\/record-rain-in-eyre-peninsula-sa-west-coast\/106401748\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106401748\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">amount of rain<\/a> we&#8217;ve had pre-seeding. (Supplied: Matt Lawler)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Some started seeding early to take advantage of the sub-soil moisture, but that comes with risks as well, because you&#8217;ll have earlier growth which could be met with some warmer days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It looks like many grain producers are seeing the forecast of dry, dry, dry and trying to get ahead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-10\/urea-fertiliser-shortage-hits-australian-farmers-iran-conflict\/106433284\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Urea price hurting farmers<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Rising fertiliser costs hurting farmers but not necessarily pushing up food prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A recent survey of almost 800 growers across SA found increasing anxiety around access and the cost of fuel and fertilisers, critical to getting high yields out of their crops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-10\/urea-fertiliser-shortage-hits-australian-farmers-iran-conflict\/106433284\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106433284\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fertiliser prices have skyrocketed<\/a> since the start of the conflict in the Middle East, where much of Australia&#8217;s urea is sourced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Perry said many growers were operating on tight margins after struggling through multiple years of drought.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are telling us this uncertainty is adding further stress to already fragile farm businesses,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Venning said he was fortunate to have secured his fertiliser needs early after a &#8220;fantastic&#8221; March gave him confidence for the season ahead.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A canola field fenced next to a dirt road. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1d55aaba533a5eb41470f40f51eb8771.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Canola is widely grown in SA, but is a crop known to require significant amounts of urea fertiliser. (ABC South East SA: Elsie Adamo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Whilst it is a challenging situation, at least it&#8217;s been wet, so it&#8217;s made that decision a little easier to stick your neck out and purchase the fertiliser you need,&#8221; Mr Venning said.<\/p>\n<p>Input costs skyrocketing<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Eyre Peninsula farmer Phillip Docking will still plant a crop this year, despite his budget going up at least $180,000 due to rising fuel and fertiliser costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Docking grows mainly wheat and canola, and was looking at a reasonable season following recent rains.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;&#8221;Budget was done three weeks before this war started, and pretty much we came out lineball \u2026 then the war happened,&#8221;  Mr Docking said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Primarily for fertiliser, we&#8217;d be up $100,000 \u2014 and we need it because canola and wheat, you&#8217;ve really got to put urea on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ll do the best we can not to overspend, and hopefully grain prices and yields will be up a bit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two men stand in front of a white uet with a green paddock behind them.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/9caa6b6490f155306332e1a7e30913f6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Koppio farmers Phil Docking and his son Jake will still go ahead and plant a crop this winter, despite escalating costs for diesel and fertiliser. (ABC Rural: Brooke Neindorf)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Docking said he had &#8220;lots of fixed commitments&#8221; that meant he had to go forward with a crop, despite the challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Like every farmer, you&#8217;ve got insurances, payments to the bank, interest payments and taxation that you can&#8217;t get out of, so there would automatically be a massive loss if we didn&#8217;t do something, so we got to try to maintain what we&#8217;re doing if we can, and hopefully we get a bit of a surprise, and things get better than we expect,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Markets another challenge<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bendigo Bank senior agricultural analyst Sean Hickey said farmers sowing crops early had limited options to respond to the current market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s not going to be wholesale changes to planting programs, it&#8217;s just simply too late,&#8221; Mr Hickey said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Most growers have had planting programs in place 12 months out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a blue shirt smiles at the camera.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1f9961016456565d6c381dd3238131b4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Senior agricultural analyst with \u00a0Bendigo Bank Agribusiness, Sean Hickey.
