{"id":594062,"date":"2026-04-08T19:54:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T19:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/594062\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T19:54:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T19:54:13","slug":"failures-not-an-option-masters-chief-makes-strong-statement-on-golf-ball-rollback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/594062\/","title":{"rendered":"Failure&#8217;s Not An Option&#8217; &#8211; Masters Chief Makes Strong Statement On Golf Ball Rollback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-ec97cba3-aa2d-4798-b69e-769bb3ecd756\">Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley believes it\u2019s time for the talking to stop on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/features\/golf-ball-rollback-the-arguments-for-and-against\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/features\/golf-ball-rollback-the-arguments-for-and-against\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/features\/golf-ball-rollback-the-arguments-for-and-against\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">golf ball rollback<\/a> debate.<\/p>\n<p>Ridley gave his thoughts to the media ahead of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/tour\/the-masters\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/tour\/the-masters\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/tour\/the-masters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Masters<\/a>, and first touched on the issue in his introduction, saying: \u201cWe have been consistent in our support of the governing bodies in their effort to regulate the distance elite players are hitting the golf ball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-43a46eea-081f-4a0b-84e2-5302b7742f34-0\">Initially, the plan was to introduce the rollback, which would see the distance of the longest hitters reduced by 13 to 15 yards, in 2028 for professional golf. However, that now looks like being <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/golf-ball-rollback-tweaked-governing-bodies-feedback\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/golf-ball-rollback-tweaked-governing-bodies-feedback\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/golf-ball-rollback-tweaked-governing-bodies-feedback\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pushed to 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Ridley, who also pointed out that Augusta National\u2019s support for the rollback hasn\u2019t wavered, later came back to the subject, suggesting that it\u2019s imperative it is addressed.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThere\u2019s always been quite a lot of agreement. My feeling on this subject is failure&#8217;s not an option. I think we need to continue to work together to come to some agreement. Tough issues like this require compromise, and I think there has been some compromise to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ridley thinks for the good of the game, increasing driving distances can\u2019t be the only consideration.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWhat we&#8217;re trying to do is to protect the integrity of what makes golf so great. I think I tried to articulate it in my comments, and that&#8217;s that it&#8217;s more than about just hitting prodigious drives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Subscribe to the Golf Monthly newsletter to stay up to date with all the latest tour news, equipment news, reviews, head-to-heads and buyer\u2019s guides from our team of experienced experts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI talked to Jackson Herrington, one of our young amateurs, and he told me that yesterday he hit it over the bunker on one and five, which is about a 325-yard carry, and one was into the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.24%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5m9wjZ5Tm274NEqWdAr9VN.jpg\" alt=\"Jackson Herrington during The Masters\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5m9wjZ5Tm274NEqWdAr9VN.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5m9wjZ5Tm274NEqWdAr9VN.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Ridley revealed he&#8217;d been given feedback on driving distances from amateur Jackson Herrington<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0e57d005-c888-4fda-8299-c36b83f724dc\">Augusta National is one course that, without drastic measures, would struggle to continue lengthening holes to accommodate increasing driving distances, as Ridley acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>He explained: \u201cI&#8217;ve said that we can make changes, but there&#8217;s not much we can do to make changes, number one, unless we tear down the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/tour\/us-masters\/masters-history-records\/eisenhower-cabin-augusta-national-88208\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/tour\/us-masters\/masters-history-records\/eisenhower-cabin-augusta-national-88208\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/tour\/us-masters\/masters-history-records\/eisenhower-cabin-augusta-national-88208\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eisenhower Cabin<\/a>, and we&#8217;re not going to do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>However, he believes now is the time to act, with the debate having raged for years. He said: \u201cWe&#8217;ll make changes when we can, but I think it&#8217;s time to really address this issue. It&#8217;s been talked about for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ridley touched on a number of other subjects frequently in the news, too. One was the issue of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/liv-golf-secures-official-world-golf-ranking-points\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/liv-golf-secures-official-world-golf-ranking-points\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/liv-golf-secures-official-world-golf-ranking-points\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LIV Golf world ranking points<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The circuit was finally awarded them for the 2026 season, but only for the top 10 and ties of each tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Ridley believes there are still some issues that need addressing for more ranking points to come its way, but he remains hopeful they can be fixed.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe issues involved in LIV getting or not getting ranking points has been public in Trevor Immelman&#8217;s letter to LIV a while back. And several of the issues that were raised have been addressed, which resulted in LIV receiving limited points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know what those issues are. Indeed, only one of the world&#8217;s top 10, Ethan Fang, is among the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/meet-amateurs-2026-masters-field\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/meet-amateurs-2026-masters-field\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/meet-amateurs-2026-masters-field\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">six amateurs in the field<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, Augusta National introduced a new category which sees the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/augusta-national-adds-new-way-to-qualify-for-2024-masters\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/augusta-national-adds-new-way-to-qualify-for-2024-masters\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/augusta-national-adds-new-way-to-qualify-for-2024-masters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">winner of the NCAA Division I Men&#8217;s Individual Championship gaining a place<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 winner, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/michael-la-sasso-joins-liv-golf\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/michael-la-sasso-joins-liv-golf\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/michael-la-sasso-joins-liv-golf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael LeSasso, forfeited his spot to turn pro and join LIV Golf<\/a>, but Ridley doesn\u2019t see it as a worrying trend.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cWe&#8217;ve lost a few players because of that, but really not that many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he didn\u2019t rule out considering more categories for amateurs to qualify for The Masters, adding: \u201cI&#8217;m not saying we&#8217;re going to add any other categories, but we might because we&#8217;re going to look at that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had a similar message for pro pathways, in particular with regards to national opens. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/masters-open-championship-new-qualifying-criteria-announcement\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/masters-open-championship-new-qualifying-criteria-announcement\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/masters-open-championship-new-qualifying-criteria-announcement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">From 2026, select national opens<\/a> provided spots to the winners, and Ridley wouldn\u2019t rule out adding more.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI do think there might be other national opens that should be considered. One eyebrow-raising move came four years ago, when <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/dude-perfect-film-youtube-video-with-bryson-dechambeau-at-the-masters\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/dude-perfect-film-youtube-video-with-bryson-dechambeau-at-the-masters\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/news\/dude-perfect-film-youtube-video-with-bryson-dechambeau-at-the-masters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Augusta National opened its gates to golf influencers Dude Perfect<\/a>, who filmed a YouTube video at the course with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/tag\/bryson-dechambeau\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/tag\/bryson-dechambeau\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/tag\/bryson-dechambeau\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bryson DeChambeau<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, while Ridley revealed new approaches are always being considered, he admitted that may have been a step too far.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI do think we need to be looking at nontraditional ways of promoting the tournament, but more so promoting golf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few years ago we had Dude Perfect playing frisbee at Amen Corner. In retrospect, I like those guys, but that may not have been the best idea.
