Most people would panic or stand in disbelief at seeing their home cut in half and carted away on the back of a truck.<\/p>\n

But David and Melanie Moor felt nothing but relief at seeing their retirement home shuffled 100 metres sideways onto their own land.<\/p>\n

The couple, who live in south-west Victoria, have been embroiled in a legal battle for the past two years<\/a> after their dream home was constructed on the wrong block of land in a Camperdown subdivision, directly adjacent to the property they owned.<\/p>\n

The couple said they believed they had the right block after the real estate agent showed them the property in 2021, but the agent denied any wrongdoing and said the couple may have gotten confused.<\/p>\n

The parties explored the option of a land swap, but the landowner said the properties were not like-for-like.<\/p>\n

In August 2025, the landowner gave the couple a 14-day notice period to remove the house and remediate the land, or the house might be sold.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That was extended and in February, the couple agreed to clear the block by May 2.<\/p>\n

The house has been moved from their neighbour’s block onto their own land and the couple say they are on track to meet the deadline.<\/p>\n

Previously, the landowner’s lawyer told the ABC the owner had been “very patient” and attempted to work with the Moor family, but lawyers were needed to solve the dispute.<\/p>\n

The landowner declined to comment.<\/p>\n

‘We’re stubborn’<\/p>\n

The Moor’s home now sits on empty oil drums while it awaits restumping.<\/p>\n

All services have been disconnected, with the septic system and electrical wiring dug up and removed.<\/p>\n

Now, the couple need to dig up the 160 stumps on their neighbour’s property that once supported the home, pull out trees they’ve planted, and return the block to its original state.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It was a weight lifted off our shoulders when we did see the truck transferring the house onto the correct block \u2026 but in the meantime, we’ve got a lot more work to do,” Ms Moor said.<\/p>\n

The couple said they were told by a contractor the house would not survive another relocation, but found another house mover who could do the job.<\/p>\n

The couple said they hoped there was no major structural damage, but expected to re-plaster the interior walls.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We don’t know what damage is inside at the moment because it did look a bit wobbly coming over on the truck,” Ms Moor said.<\/p>\n

“We’re not game enough to go inside yet because the house isn’t stable enough on the drums.”<\/p>\n

The couple expect it will cost about $100,000 to move the home, restump it, and connect it to electricity and other services, on top of the $500,000 they had already spent.<\/p>\n

That’s before the couple even think about interior decorating or landscaping.<\/p>\n

“There’s a lot of work to go, but we’re very stubborn and we’ll keep going as long as we can,” Mr Moor said.More news from regional Victoria’Do your own homework’<\/p>\n

Mr Moor said he hoped he could save anyone from similar heartbreak by sharing his story.<\/p>\n

“If anyone else is doing this kind of decision, don’t just rely on the professionals, do your own homework,” he said.<\/p>\n

The couple have bought a 20-foot caravan and plan to live there for the next year with their 20-year-old daughter while they work on getting the house up to scratch.<\/p>\n

“It is a relief but it’s also been very stressful,” Ms Moor said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Our mental health has taken a massive hit \u2026 but look, it’s coming to the end now.”<\/p>\n

Despite the upheaval, the Moor family said they did not regret moving to Camperdown.<\/p>\n

The couple were proud to see their daughter thrive at the local high school and find a job after graduating.<\/p>\n
