An Aussie worker has been given a \u201creality check\u201d after questioning whether he should quit his $180,000 a year job<\/a> for one paying half the amount. Receiving a competitive salary<\/a> is top of mind for many Aussie workers right now, but an expert has warned getting a bigger pay packet in exchange for being burnt out<\/a> wasn\u2019t always worth it.<\/p>\n The Barefoot Investor Scott Pape<\/a> has urged an Aussie worker<\/a> not to work himself into an \u201cearly grave chasing money” he already has. The 54-year-old wrote to the finance expert for help and said he was \u201ccompletely burnt out\u201d and considering quitting his job<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI’m in \u2018procrastination city\u2019 every day, faking it to my boss, and hate what I do despite the good pay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been offered my dream job<\/a> helping people, but the salary is half my current income ($90k vs $180k).\u201d<\/p>\n RELATED<\/p>\n The man said his family was in a \u201cstrong financial shape\u201d and had paid off their home, had $100,000 in their emergency savings bucket, $100,000 in shares and $600,000 in superannuation<\/a>.<\/p>\n But he said he was worried they wouldn\u2019t be able to cut their spending in half to match his new income.<\/p>\n \u201cAt 54, I\u2019m starting to wonder what the hell I\u2019m doing. Do I \u2018toughen up, princess\u2019 and persist with the high-paying job I hate, or risk a poorer retirement<\/a> for a more satisfying last decade of work?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Pape said the man had \u201cwon the money game\u201d with his home paid off, no debts, a solid savings and superannuation all with \u201c10 years left on the clock\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cHere\u2019s the real question: why are you still playing with your head down in the scrum?\u201d Pape said.<\/p>\n \u201cBurnout<\/a> is just the bloke\u2019s word for depression. Hating your job affects your health, your relationships, and whether you even make it to retirement in one piece \u2013 let alone enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n Pape recommended the man \u201ctest-drive\u201d living on the new $90,000 salary for the next three months and see if it was sustainable or brought up unexpected stresses.<\/p>\n He then recommended the man model how the salary cut would impact his retirement<\/a> and said his super fund should be able to help him with his.<\/p>\n Pape noted the impact on the man\u2019s retirement may be \u201cless dramatic\u201d than he thinks.<\/p>\n According to the latest ATO statistics<\/a>, the average man aged 50 to 54 has $254,071 in their super fund, while the average woman has $190,175.<\/p>\n Story continues <\/p>\n The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) estimates that to retire comfortably<\/a>, a single homeowner would need $595,000 and a couple would need $690,000.<\/p>\n This would give them $52,383 and $73,875 annually with a mix of super and a part-age pension.<\/p>\n ASFA\u2019s Super Detective tool<\/a> has estimated that a 54-year-old today would need an average balance of $361,000 to achieve said comfortable retirement.<\/p>\n Finally, Pape said the man could also consider taking the middle path.<\/p>\n \u201cCould you negotiate part-time hours at your current job while transitioning?
