His sentencing is set for June 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Heuermann\u2019s former wife, Asa Ellerup, and their daughter were in court for the 30-minute hearing with his sentencing now set down for June 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney held a media conference after the hearing and spoke about the grief of the victims\u2019 families and congratulated authorities for their work on the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cHe thought that by killing them he could silence them forever and get away with murder,\u201d Mr Tierney said, according to <a class=\"css-hwy1qg-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/gilgo-beach-serial-killer-suspect-rex-heuermann-expected-plead-guilty-rcna266547\">NBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cHe said (he) tried to present himself as the harmless father next door. But he was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Heuermann\u2019s defence attorney, Michael Brown, told reporters outside court that his client\u2019s decision to plead guilty was a \u201csense of relief\u201d the outlet reported..<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI think that was a huge sense of relief for him,\u201d Mr Brown said of Heuermann.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWhen you have that type of \u2014 in your head, and on your body \u2014 I think by admitting it, it\u2019s cathartic to some extent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Mr Brown said Heuermann, who maintained his innocence since his 2023 arrest, will not provide details of how he committed the crimes at the sentencing hearing. When asked whether his client has expressed remorse, the lawyer said Heuermann will likely have something to say in court on June 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cHe certainly wanted to save the families of the victims the ordeal of going to trial, coupled with saving his family from that,\u201d Mr Brown added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Ms Ellerup and her attorney also made statements to reporters outside the courthouse, offering condolences for the families of the victims and asking for privacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cMy thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,\u201d Ms Ellerup said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cTheir loss is immeasurable, and the focus should be on them at this time in the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Melissa Cann, the sister of one of Heuermann\u2019s victims, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, said told the press there is \u201cfinally a sense of relief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cToday is not about the person responsible. Today is about the women\u2019s lives who were stolen, about their voices, their future, their families. They are the reason we are here,\u201d Ms Cann said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Authorities say that between 2010 and 2011, a total of 11 sets of human remains, most of which belonged to sex workers, were found along a beachside parkway in Gilgo Beach, a small oceanfront neighbourhood on Long Island\u2019s southern shore.
