Former Cowboys player Tom Duffy will get a chance to haunt his former club after being promoted to start at No.7 for the Broncos on Friday night against North Queensland<\/a>. Broncos coach Michael Maguire named Adam Reynolds at halfback<\/a> on Tuesday, but the captain was ruled out on Thursday morning with a groin injury.<\/p>\n

It means Duffy will come in at halfback and partner Ezra Mam in the halves for Brisbane. The 22-year-old played six NRL<\/a> games for the Cowboys last year, but failed to lock down his spot. He moved to the Broncos in 2026 after the Cowboys opted not to re-sign him.<\/p>\n

Reynolds’ absence means the Broncos are missing five players from their full-strength side against the Cowboys. Reece Walsh fractured his cheekbone<\/a> last week and will miss 4-6 weeks, while Ben Hunt suffered a knee injury and is out until Round 14.<\/p>\n

Billy Walters is still weeks away from returning from an ACL rupture he suffered last year, while Grant Anderson is sidelined until Round 16. Jesse Arthars will play fullback for Walsh, while Blake Mozer has been named on the bench and is in line to play his first NRL game since 2024.<\/p>\n

Arthars said he’ll make the most of his opportunity after being forced to bide his time in reserve-grade. The experienced veteran also backed Duffy to shine.<\/p>\n

“I have been playing Cup with Duff. If he does get a shot it is going to be awesome for him,” Arthars said on Wednesday. “He is just a very good organiser, very vocal and good at steering the team around. If Reyno is not healthy then that is something Duffy can easily fill in and do.”<\/p>\n

He added: “I don’t feel the pressure (replacing Walsh). Obviously we are two different players and I just want to bring my strengths. I am sure the boys will have faith in me and that is something I want to repay to my teammates and to Madge (coach Maguire) for picking me and trusting me.<\/p>\n

“I like to bring a lot of energy and talk a lot around the club. If I am playing fullback that is something I need to be able to do and something I am comfortable with.”<\/p>\n

Broncos hooker Cory Paix welcomed the return of Mozer to first-grade. “I have been through those times (playing reserve-grade). Patience is a key, really. You just have to be ready because you never know when you will be called upon. Blake has all the ability in the world, he just has to be himself.”<\/p>\n
