Making the finals consistently is a definite KPI for clubs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Former Panthers boss Phil Gould was at the club then they opwned the NRL\u2019s first centre of excellence.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/9d5b89cacf21a7224b02706b0aa8435dd03f942f.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Former Panthers boss Phil Gould was at the club then they opwned the NRL\u2019s first centre of excellence.<\/p>\n<p>At the top of the list is Melbourne \u2013 who made all 10\u2013 followed by the Panthers, Roosters and Sharks with nine appearances. They were the four stand-outs.<\/p>\n<p>The Raiders and Broncos are next with six appearances each, then the Rabbitohs on five, Manly, Parramatta, Cowboys and Newcastle on four, Canterbury and the Warriors on three, the Titans on two, Dragons with one and the Wests Tigers on zero.<\/p>\n<p>For the purpose of this exercise the Dolphins, being new, are excused.<\/p>\n<p>If you analyse that list, money is not the only factor. It\u2019s important, but leadership is more important.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The 2025 NRL finals series was fairly typical of the past decade with big guns Melbourne, Penrith, the Roosters and the Sharks all there again.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1bf9a0d659521d568e5ab8146c4e85fb3c68cc20.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>The 2025 NRL finals series was fairly typical of the past decade with big guns Melbourne, Penrith, the Roosters and the Sharks all there again.Steven Siewert<\/p>\n<p>And when you have both \u2013 money and strong leadership \u2013 you have a potent combination.<\/p>\n<p>That combination is evident at Melbourne, the Roosters and the Panthers.<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne is owned by an active consortium led by online wagering multi-millionaire Matt Tripp, the current chair, who created Sportsbet, Beteasy and Betr.<\/p>\n<p>The stability and drive of the leadership flows down to head coach Craig Bellamy and football manager Frank Ponissi, who are the best in the business.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nick Politis is the blueprint for all private NRL benefactors \u2013 you have to live it and breathe it and be prepared to spend money you won\u2019t see again.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/9bfa4e55851baa6e1d8d6a25daf25df73be9f029988e11aae4bfdd19032a8760.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/>Nick Politis is the blueprint for all private NRL benefactors \u2013 you have to live it and breathe it and be prepared to spend money you won\u2019t see again.NRL<\/p>\n<p>The Roosters are very similar, where benefactor and chairman Nick Politis is surrounded by other business heavyweights like Mark Bouris. They run the club with an iron fist and deep pockets and are never shy about their ambition to win premierships.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Trent Robinson has been at the helm for three premiership wins in the past 13 seasons. They are as stable as the Harbour Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Penrith is slightly different. Their wealth comes from the mighty Panthers group of clubs, the biggest of which is their headquarters in Penrith complete with a giant club, multiple restaurants, two hotels, a convention centre and entertainment quarter.<\/p>\n<p>For years it was run by CEO Brian Fletcher and a strong board which was the first to build a football centre of excellence. After Phil Gould did the groundwork, coach Ivan Cleary and his son and captain Nathan went to work on turning the enormous junior talent base into a <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/penrith-played-the-best-game-i-ve-ever-seen-and-they-re-getting-better-every-week-20260408-p5zm47.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">premiership-winning juggernaut<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The outlier among the four most successful finals teams of the past decade are the Sharks. There\u2019s not much money, they have a low but passionate supporter base and play out of the <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/shark-park-stark-park-call-it-what-you-like-it-s-a-dive-20250808-p5mldy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">worst professional ground<\/a> in the nation \u2013 Shark Park, also known as Portaloo Park.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The hill at Shark Park on game day where portaloos are a constant feature. Despite woeful facilities, they are perennial finalists.Neil Breen\/SMH<\/p>\n<p>The club\u2019s redevelopment <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/the-sharks-had-an-8m-grant-for-a-centre-of-excellence-then-it-all-went-pear-shaped-20250821-p5mora.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has been a financial disaster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite that, they won the title in 2016 and have made the finals nine times in 10 seasons. Stuart\u2019s passion has kept Canberra competitive for years in the NRL.Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Canberra\u2019s success comes down to leadership too \u2013 mainly CEO Don Furner and coach Ricky Stuart. They are the club\u2019s DNA. Attracting players to long winters in Canberra is not easy and keeping them is hard. They deal with a dud local government with no vision and <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/cronulla-and-canberra-played-in-last-year-s-semi-final-can-they-seriously-challenge-this-year-20260329-p5zjoe.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">do their best at a decaying stadium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Broncos should be more successful than they are simply because of their size, health and feverish 70,000-strong membership. <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/from-king-wally-to-gordie-and-madge-the-brisbane-broncos-soap-opera-rolls-on-20260324-p5u4qb.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Off-field brawling and angst<\/a> has held them back, although one premiership and six finals appearances in ten seasons is a borderline pass mark.<\/p>\n<p>In the under-achievement department are Parramatta and the Bulldogs. The two giants of the \u201980s have fumbled their way through the last decade despite the advantage of rich leagues clubs.<\/p>\n<p>Both clubs have had boardroom brawls for decades and it has cost them dearly.<\/p>\n<p>Souths have unbelievable ownership and a leadership group dripping with passion. Chair Nick Pappas and CEO Blake Solly are as good as they come, but making 50 per cent of finals series over a decade is probably a slight under-achievement. You could argue luck has played a part, but you make your own luck.<\/p>\n<p>Manly is impossible to get a handle on. Owners the <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/from-silvertails-to-struggle-street-can-manly-return-to-their-powerhouse-past-20260331-p5zk94.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wealthy Penn family<\/a> don\u2019t run the club in the same way as Politis at the Roosters. It\u2019s passive and you need to send out a search party to find the passion. Since the golden era of 2008 to 2011 with two premierships and a grand final appearance, nothing much has happened apart from the emergence of the Trbojevic brothers and the routine sacking of coaches and CEOs. The most historic club in the competition, it\u2019s been crickets since the 2010 premiership under Wayne Bennett. To only be in the finals once in 10 years is pitiful.<\/p>\n<p>Both Manly and the Dragons have gone from being big clubs to small clubs this century. Then again, two finals appearances is one more than the Dragons. Go figure.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the Wests Tigers. A <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/we-need-unity-interim-wests-tigers-chief-reveals-blueprint-to-heal-fractured-club-20251212-p5nn4b.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">total disaster for two decades<\/a>. They are owned by the Holman Barnes group which controls many clubs including the mega-rich Wests Ashfield which is dripping in poker machine riches.<\/p>\n<p>But they have a <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/national\/nsw\/the-tigers-have-begun-the-season-in-style-but-their-owner-is-under-the-microscope-again-20260401-p5zkho.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disastrous board<\/a> and it flows down to the football club. Not making the finals since 2011 says it all.
