Detroit Pistons point guard Cade Cunningham made his return on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Bucks after missing 11 games with a collapsed lung<\/a>. He registered a double-double in 26 minutes, piling up 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go along with 10 assists and 5 rebounds during a 137-111 win<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t take long for him to etch his name in the box score. He played seven minutes in the first quarter, scoring four quick points, including two on a dunk made possible by an alley-oop pass from Ausar Thompson.<\/p>\n

It was Cunningham\u2019s first action since he suffered his collapsed lung after diving for a loose ball and colliding with Tre Johnson in a March 17 win over the Washington Wizards.<\/p>\n

Cunningham was seen shooting around in warmups and was upgraded to questionable for Wednesday\u2019s game against Milwaukee after it was initially announced that he would be reevaluated on April 12.<\/a> Cunningham had previously made his first public appearance since the injury<\/a> a few weeks prior.<\/p>\n

Cunningham is having a breakout season in his fifth year with the Pistons. He came into the night averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 assists (second in the NBA behind Nikola Joki\u0107), 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. His assist and steal averages are career highs. The Pistons have clinched the No. 1 seed in the East for the first time since the 2006-2007 season and their first Central Division title since the 2007-08 season.<\/p>\n

Despite Cunningham\u2019s numbers, he will not be eligible to receive individual accolades because he won\u2019t be able to reach the NBA\u2019s 65-game minimum needed for consideration. The rule, which was introduced during the 2023-24 season, requires players to appear in at least 65 games to be eligible for awards such as MVP, DPOY and All-NBA teams.<\/p>\n

Cunningham has played in 62 games, and the Pistons now have just two remaining. He was expected to be in the running for honors such as All-NBA and MVP before the injury.<\/p>\n

Cunningham\u2019s injury has sparked debate about the 65-game rule.<\/p>\n

The National Basketball Players Association issued a statemen<\/a>t in March calling for the rule to be \u201cabolished or reformed\u201d following Cunningham\u2019s injury. His agent, Jeff Schwartz, told ESPN\u2019s Shams Charania<\/a> that the 24-year-old point guard should be granted an exception.<\/p>\n

\u201cCade has delivered a first-team All-NBA season,\u201d Schwartz said. \u201cIf he falls just short of an arbitrary games-played threshold due to a legitimate injury, it should not disqualify him from recognition he has clearly earned over the course of the season. The league should reward excellence, not enforce rigid cutoffs that ignore context. An exception needs to be made.\u201d<\/p>\n

NBA commissioner Adam Silver backed the 65-game rule<\/a>, saying it was the league\u2019s solution to load management and players resting during the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not ready to say it\u2019s not working,\u201d Silver said. \u201cIt is working. I\u2019m not ready to say that because there is a sense of unfairness for one player, the rule doesn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pistons big man Isaiah Stewart, who was also questionable on Wednesday after missing 13 games in a row with a left calf strain, wound up playing against the Bucks and chipped in eight points on 3-of-3 shooting in 11 minutes off the bench.<\/p>\n

Stewart has played in 56 games this season, making him ineligible for awards such as Defensive Player of the Year or the All-Defensive Team. On Wednesday, he told reporters<\/a> he considered returning to preserve eligibility but decided not to rush back, believing it was best for both himself and the team.<\/p>\n

Pistons All-Star Jalen Duren and the emergence of Daniss Jenkins helped the team continue to win without Cunningham in the lineup.<\/p>\n
