While there’s not a lot you can do to avoid the common cold (aside from wearing a mask at large public events and keeping on top of hand hygiene), we are lucky enough in Australia to be able to access the influenza vaccine (or the ‘flu jab’ as we like to call it).

The flu, although it’s often used as a synonym for the common cold, is actually a really nasty illness that can keep you out of action for several weeks. Symptoms include muscle aches, fatigue, congestion, fever and diarrhea – all things best avoided if possible. While you can catch the flu year-round, in Australia you’re more likely to catch it between May and September. Getting the flu jab before winter kicks off can help protect not only you, but also the other more vulnerable members of your community.

Remember: if you’re planning on getting the COVID-19 vaccine as well as the flu jab, make sure you leave at least 14 days between appointments!

Where can you get the flu jab?

Many chemists/pharmacies around Australia offer the flu jab (including Chemist Warehouse and Terry White Chemmart), and most have an online booking portal where you can select an appropriate time and view the costs associated. Some even offer walk-in appointments, so keep an eye out at your local chemist. If you have a regular GP, then you can also chat to them about receiving the jab and ask any questions you might have.

To read about the vaccine itself, including who is most at risk from the flu and some of the common side effects of the flu jab, visit Australia’s Department of Health website.

How much is a flu jab with OSHC?

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) normally covers most of your medical expenses while living in Australia. However, vaccinations may or may not be covered by your policy. Make sure you review your policy documentation or contact your specific OSHC provider to check if vaccinations are included in your coverage. If you’re unable to have it covered, then the regular price is usually between $25 and $30, depending on the provider.

Where can you get a free flu jab as a student?

Some universities do offer free flu jabs for their students, for example, the University of Tasmania, Monash University, La Trobe University and the University of the Sunshine Coast. Most of these universities provide a voucher you can take to your local pharmacy as ‘payment’ for your vaccine, however, some also have on-site clinics set up at the campus. It’s definitely worth looking into whether your university offers a free jab; it’s convenient and will save you a bit of cash.

As we say goodbye to summer and welcome the cooler months, it’s important to make sure we keep…

[10
64,63,137,16962
0":"post-595130","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-health","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-health","11":"tag-winter
["GET
