Less than 24 hours after I proclaimed that Sincaraz were a cut above the rest on clay, both Carlos and Jannik dropped a set in their Round of 16 matches; although both came through solidly in the end.<\/p>\n
Defending champion Alcaraz fought back from a messy, error-filled second set (23 unforced errors) to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry, while Sinner surrendered his first Masters 1000 set since October but regrouped well against Tomas Machac.<\/p>\n
Joao Fonseca stole the headlines, reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final with a convincing straight-sets win over Matteo Berrettini.<\/p>\n

After a dominant opener, Alcaraz regrouped in the decider to stretch his winning streak at Monte-Carlo to seven matches. He\u2019ll face eighth seed Alexander Bublik in the last eight.<\/p>\n

Joao Fonseca continued his run, reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final with a commanding straight-sets win over Matteo Berrettini.<\/p>\n
Fonseca played with high intensity and precision, becoming the first Brazilian to reach this stage at a Masters 1000 since 2011 (and the youngest man to do so in Monte-Carlo since Nadal and Gasquet in 2005). He\u2019ll face Alexander Zverev next.<\/p>\n
Berrettini had looked unplayable when he double-bagelled Medvedev, but today his serve never got going.<\/p>\n

Alexander Zverev looked much sharper than in his previous round, cruising through the first set and recovering after failing to serve out the match to reach the Monte-Carlo quarter-finals for the first time since 2022.<\/p>\n

After cruising in the opener and fighting back from 2-5 down in the second, Sinner regrouped in the decider to keep his title hopes (and No. 1 ranking ambitions) alive. He\u2019ll face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n

Alexander Bublik produced a stylish performance, channelling his trademark variety (including a stunning one-handed backhand winner) to reach his first Monte-Carlo quarter-final.<\/p>\n

Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the quarter-finals when ninth seed Casper Ruud was forced to retire while trailing 7-5, 2-2. Auger-Aliassime will now face Jannik Sinner.<\/p>\n
Ruud\u2019s injury looked like a calf issue, so we will see if it keeps him out of any of his scheduled clay-court events.<\/p>\n
