{"id":596981,"date":"2026-04-10T02:38:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T02:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/596981\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T02:38:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T02:38:10","slug":"alex-de-minaur-sets-up-monte-carlo-masters-quarterfinal-clash-with-local-hero-valentin-vacherot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/596981\/","title":{"rendered":"Alex de Minaur sets up Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinal clash with local hero Valentin Vacherot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Alex de Minaur has spoiled the coming-of-age party for &#8220;an incredible talent&#8221; as he marched into the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters in his first clay-court tournament of the season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Australian had his hands full in his last-16 clash against rising star Alexander Blockx, who celebrated his 21st birthday the day before by beating 10th seed Flavio Cobolli, before finally subduing the Belgian qualifier 7-5, 7-6 (7\/4) on Court des Princes at the Monte-Carlo Country Club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It thrust de Minaur into the quarters at the prestigious ATP 1000 event, where he made the semis last year, and helped erase the disappointment of two recent early exits at Indian Wells and Miami.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It was unfortunate to lose early in the States, because I was actually quite happy with my level and thought I hopefully could go deep,&#8221; the world number six said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But these things happen, and ultimately, I&#8217;m happy I&#8217;ve bounced back here on the clay. (Getty Images: Julian Finney)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Neither could summon a break in the second stanza, but de Minaur&#8217;s extra aggression in the tiebreak \u2014 he hit 21 winners \u2014 helped him wrap up the hard-fought victory in one hour and 47 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the quarters, de Minaur will find himself friendless as he faces local Monegasque hero Valentin Vacherot, who will jump into the top 20 for the first time in his career after beating Hubert Hurkacz 6-7 (4\/7), 6-3, 6-4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That continued the fairytale rise that began when then-world number 204 <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-12\/valentin-vacherot-wins-shanghai-masters-atp-tournament\/105883038\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105883038\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vacherot beat five seeded players, including Novak Djokovic, to win October&#8217;s Shanghai Masters as a qualifier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Vacherot, the only player from Monaco on the singles tour, beat world number five and 2025 runner-up Lorenzo Musetti in the previous round to give de Minaur a look at the top five for the first time in his career but, with semifinal points to defend, the Australian could actually drop back to seventh courtesy of Felix Auger-Aliassime&#8217;s run to the quarters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radio\/programs\/abc-sport-daily\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC Sport Daily podcast<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">ABC Sport Daily is your daily sports conversation.
