Classic TV show: Rake

Streaming on ABC iview, Netflix, Prime Video and Stan

When I moved overseas, Rake became my comfort show. I loved seeing my hometown of Sydney on screen — albeit a limited version of it, mostly concentrated at a well-loved cafe in Kings Cross and the space between Martin Place, the Supreme Court and St Mary’s Cathedral.

That pleasure is still there today, and the show — about a cheeky, verbose criminal defence barrister who cannot be tamed — remains a balm for me.

Loosely inspired by real-life barrister Charles Waterstreet, Rake ran for six seasons from 2010 to 2018. The early seasons see Richard Roxburgh‘s Cleaver Greene in court each week, defending cannibals (Hugo Weaving), shock jocks (Rachel Griffiths) and high-powered embezzlers (Don Hany). Along the way, Cleaver — and oddly enough his son, Fuzz (Keegan Joyce) — picks up plenty of lovers and enemies, leading him all the way to a new life in Canberra.

But beneath the banter and an endless stream of petty gripes are stories of friendship: between Cleaver and his gentle best friend Barney (Russell Dykstra), and his bemused ex-wife Wendy (Caroline Brazier), and even his long-suffering assistant Nicole (Kate Box).

If you can’t help falling for the wrong kind of person, perhaps you’ll also fall for Cleaver Greene.

Her neuroses haven’t vanished, but Barnett is learning to live more comfortably with them on her fourth album.

Album: Courtney Barnett — Creature Of Habit

Out now on Mom + Pop

The scruffy guitars and droll lyrical observations that first skyrocketed Courtney Barnett into one of Australia’s hottest indie rock exports are now enriched with the perspective of 11 years’ growth and hard-won experience.

Her neuroses haven’t vanished, but Barnett is learning to live more comfortably with them, embracing healthier coping mechanisms we could all learn from.

Right now, when the world often feels like too damn much, it’s comforting to know there’s somebody like Barnett in your corner, mining magic from the mundane with more musical wit and charm than most could muster.

ABC reporter Dominique Bayens says the case of the Nannup Four is the one story she’s never been able to shake.

Podcast: Expanse: The Nannup Four

Out now via ABC

In July 2007, four people — Simon Kadwill, Chantelle McDougall, their six-year-old daughter Leela and friend Tony Popic — disappeared from a farm in Nannup in a remote corner of south-western WA.

A note left behind stating they had gone to Brazil to escape EMF — electromagnetic fields, which they believed were harming their health — only added to the mystery surrounding their disappearance. With no evidence the group left the country, their fate remains unknown. Did they die in a suicide pact? Or was it murder?

In Expanse: The Nannup Four, reporter Dominique Bayens revisits the 20-year-old case. She traces Chantelle’s evolution from a bubbly teenager growing up in Wodonga to a reserved and isolated young mother living on the other side of the country with the prickly and controlling Kadwill. The search for answers uncovers disturbing acts of manipulation, deception and stolen identity as it becomes obvious Kadwill, a conspiracy theorist with followers all over the world, is not who he says he is.
