{"id":597487,"date":"2026-04-10T08:15:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T08:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/597487\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T08:15:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T08:15:08","slug":"australia-on-brink-of-bjk-cup-exit-after-gibson-stunned-by-great-britain-teenager-tennis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/597487\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia on brink of BJK Cup exit after Gibson stunned by Great Britain teenager | Tennis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Australia\u2019s quest to win a place in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals is off to the worst possible start, losing both opening-day singles matches, with spearhead Talia Gibson falling to British teen Mika Stojsavljevic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gibson was expected to get the tie at Melbourne\u2019s John Cain Arena off to a flying start on Friday, but she was a shock loser 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 against the lowly ranked 17-year-old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kimberly Birrell was then unable to get the home team back on level pegging, going down 4-6 6-3 6-3 against top-ranked Brit Harriet Dart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">That leaves experienced pair Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez needing to win the doubles in the opening match on Saturday for Australia to remain alive in the tie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">World No 56 Gibson took over as the leading local following injury to Maya Joint and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/apr\/06\/talia-gibson-australia-tennis-wta-rankings-rise-interview\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrived at the tie in sparkling form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The 21-year-old had recently beaten five top 20-ranked players and rocketed to her career-high ranking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">With the visitors missing their four best players, the Australians were hot favourites to advance to the Finals in China in September, but that was quickly dismissed by big-serving Stojsavljevic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s my first time playing a match in the Billie Jean King Cup for Team Australia, so there was obviously some nerves out there today and not the way I would have liked to have played and not the result that I would have liked to have had happened,\u201d Perth product Gibson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cCredit to Mika, she came out playing really well, served amazing, so I did my best with what I was able to bring today, but unfortunately it wasn\u2019t enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mika Stojsavljevic is overcome with emotion after beating Talia Gibson during the Billie Jean King Cup qualifier in Melbourne.
