Police services will be focused on any event where there is potential for public involvement, and will be part of NSW Police\u2019s expenditure.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Victoria Police said it is aware two high-profile people are visiting Melbourne in a private capacity this month, and directed this masthead to event organisers and relevant representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice routinely assess events and visits and will deploy resources as necessary to ensure community safety,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cVictoria Police does not provide comment on specific operational arrangements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harry and Meghan\u2019s itinerary is largely different from their previous trip to Australia, notably including ticketed events held by private organisations behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<p>Public meet and greets are standard for visits made by working royals hosted by Commonwealth realms as representatives of the UK Government or the British royal family, as was the case when Harry and Meghan visited Australia in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>As such, the newlyweds were provided 24-hour police protection from the UK, with assistance from the Australian Federal Police, and travelled with a police motorcade everywhere they went during their nine-day, state-funded visit.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/what-we-know-about-harry-and-meghan-s-first-trip-to-australia-since-royal-exit-20260406-p5zllz.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Harry and Meghan on day two of their Australian tour in October 2018, in Dubbo.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775807951_697_aa5f443d0f7eeb8f9cdd5aa678b63bf8d092e510.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That plus transport, accommodation and incidentals cost Australian taxpayers a total of $410,580.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Harry and Meghan are private citizens, and are travelling to Australia for a series of private, business and philanthropic engagements \u2013 as they did over <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/lifestyle\/prince-harry-and-meghan-kick-off-colombia-tour-20240816-p5k2wf.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four days in Colombia in 2024<\/a>, when vice president Francia M\u00e1rquez invited the duke and duchess for a series of events aimed at promoting mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/royal-family\/2024\/09\/02\/meghan-harry-colombia-tour-cost-sussex\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">London\u2019s The Telegraph<\/a>, Harry and Meghan paid for their own flights, accommodation and general expenses. But Colombian taxpayers shelled out about $85,000 for internal transport and security.<\/p>\n<p>Security services have been a sore point for Harry and Meghan since they were stripped of their publicly funded police protection in the United Kingdom in February 2020, following their high-profile resignation as senior working royals and self-imposed exile to the United States.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Harry has long argued that the level of risk he, Meghan and their two children \u2013 Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four \u2013 face in the United Kingdom was not reduced by his and Meghan\u2019s decision to step back from royal duties.<\/p>\n<p>He <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/europe\/prince-harry-launches-legal-action-over-uk-police-protection-20220117-p59oo8.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">took legal action<\/a> against the Home Office in 2022 after being informed that private individuals, even if they offer to pay for it themselves, are not permitted to access state security. The High Court <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/judge-rules-prince-harry-was-not-unfairly-stripped-of-his-security-detail-during-uk-visits-20240229-p5f8mq.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ruled against him<\/a> in February 2024, and his appeal was <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/europe\/prince-harry-devastated-after-losing-uk-legal-fight-over-police-protection-20250503-p5lw6r.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">formally denied in May<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC), which authorises security on behalf of the Home Office for senior members of the British royal family, is undertaking a full risk assessment to decide on reinstating police protection for Harry and Meghan.<\/p>\n<p>British media has <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/royal-family\/2026\/03\/20\/home-office-taxpayer-funded-security-prince-harry-decision\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> civil servants on the committee fear public backlash if Harry and Meghan are given taxpayer-funded security.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/celebrity\/there-s-something-about-meghan-the-distinct-duchess-continues-to-polarise-us-20260330-p5zjwu.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Meghan Markle during her 2018 visit to Sydney. \" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/794d3e38a0c734f60e37db799a4006b14b8d7cc6.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was backlash in Australia by way of a Change.org petition called \u201cNo Taxpayer-Funding or Official Support for Harry &amp; Meghan\u2019s Private Visit to Australia!\u201d that prompted a representative for Harry and Meghan to issue a statement in March. It now has 43,300 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a moot point. The trip is being funded privately, so I\u2019m not sure what this petition hopes to achieve,\u201d a spokesperson for the Sussexes told the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p>Harry is <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/what-we-know-about-harry-and-meghan-s-first-trip-to-australia-since-royal-exit-20260406-p5zllz.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">due to give a keynote address<\/a> at the InterEdge Psychosocial Safety Summit, which runs from April 15 to 16, in Melbourne. In-person tickets start from $997.<\/p>\n<p>Meghan, meanwhile, will appear at <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/lifestyle\/life-and-relationships\/meghan-duchess-of-sussex-confirmed-to-appear-on-her-best-life-podcast-20260311-p5o9af.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Her Best Life\u2018s \u201cgirls\u2019 weekend like no other\u201d<\/a> at InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach from April 17 to 19.
