The Vancouver Canucks<\/a> are weighing changes after a dismal season that will see the team finish last in the NHL.<\/p>\n

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports that a change at general manager from Patrik Allvin and moving on from head coach Adam Foote<\/a> after just one season are being considered in Vancouver.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an ongoing process inside hockey operations with [president] Jimmy Rutherford clearly at the top,\u201d Dreger explained on Insider Trading Thursday. \u201cA week ago, it seemed less likely the Canucks were willing to consider a general manager change as Patrik Allvin remains highly regarded. But maybe you see a job restructuring for Allvin and a restructuring of hockey operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this point, I\u2019m told it\u2019s 50\/50.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s also some speculation around assistant general manager Ryan Johnson<\/a>. Did the Predators seek permission to speak with him and was permission denied by the Canucks? I\u2019m told that no such request was made. So, there\u2019s a lot going on with the Canucks.<\/p>\n

“Manny Malhotra<\/a>, the head coach of the AHL\u2019s Abbotsford Canucks, is NHL-ready. So, we could see a coaching change in the off-season in Vancouver.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut again, no decisions have been made by the brass of the Canucks. They\u2019re just continuing to evaluate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foote has guided to the Canucks to a 22-48-8 record this season, with the team owning 18 fewer points than the\u00a031st-place\u00a0Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>. He was promoted to head coach last summer after Rick Tocchet<\/a> departed the organization, eventually joining the Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> as head coach.<\/p>\n

Malhotra\u00a0has guided the AHL Canucks to a 24-37-7 record this season after winning the Calder Cup with the team last spring. He was an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> for four seasons prior to taking the job in Abbotsford and was an assistant on the Canucks staff for three seasons before that.<\/p>\n

Allvin\u00a0was hired by Rutherford in 2022 after spending 16 years in the Penguins organization, including\u00a0time as Rutherford\u2019s assistant general manager.<\/p>\n

The Canucks finished first in the Pacific Division and reached the second round of the playoffs in 2024, which marks the team\u2019s lone postseason appearance in 2020 in the Rutherford\u00a0era.<\/p>\n

Rutherford and\u00a0Allvin\u00a0have made major changes to Canucks roster over the past two seasons, headlined by shipping forward J.T. Miller<\/a> to the New York Rangers<\/a> last season and trading captain Quinn Hughes<\/a> to the Minnesota Wild<\/a> in December.<\/p>\n

The trade deadline brought more changes for the Canucks, with the team trading forward Conor Garland<\/a> to the Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> before his six-year, $36 million contract extension signed on July 1 even kicked in. Vancouver also shipped out Tyler\u00a0Myers, Kiefer Sherwood<\/a>, David Kampf<\/a> and Lukas Reichel<\/a> in their\u00a0sell-off\u00a0ahead of the deadline.<\/p>\n

Trading Miller last season ended an ongoing saga that stemmed from a rift between him and centre Elias Pettersson<\/a>. The move, however, has failed to spark the 27-year-old Pettersson, who has fallen well below a point-per-game pace since inking an eight-year, $92.8 million deal in 2024. He has 15 goals and 46 points in 65 games this season, which is nearly equal to his 2024-25 production, after posting 34 goals and 89 points in 82 games in 2023-24 to top the 30-goal mark for the third straight time.<\/p>\n

Pettersson is one of seven members of the Canucks signed through at least the 2028-29 season, along with wingers Brock Boeser<\/a> and Jake DeBrusk<\/a>, defencemen Filip Hronek<\/a> and Marcus Pettersson<\/a> and goaltenders Thatcher Demko<\/a> and Kevin Lankinen<\/a>. Both Boeser and Demko also inked their new deals on July 1, while Lankinen and Pettersson were extended last February.<\/p>\n

Rutherford joined the Canucks in 2021 after previous stints as general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> and Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>. He won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006 and built the back-to-back champion Penguins rosters in 2016 and 2017.
