Eight MLB teams on Thursday officially revealed their latest City Connect uniforms<\/a>, and while the jerseys over the five years of the program have \u201cbeen polarizing at times,\u201d MLB \u201cenvisions them continuing well into the future,\u201d according to Anthony Gharib of ESPN.com. MLB Deputy Commissioner Noah Garden said that the league views the jerseys \u201cas a key part of its ongoing efforts to appeal to younger fans and to capture the spirit … of the game\u2019s newest generation of players.\u201d Garden: \u201cI can\u2019t see us stopping this anytime soon. … Nike\u2019s been an outstanding partner. It was their idea. Fanatics has been able to execute this at a high level for us.\u201d Gharib noted the Yankees and A\u2019s have \u201cyet to participate\u201d in the City Connect series. The A\u2019s likely will \u201chave one in their early Las Vegas years,\u201d though the Yankees\u2019 participation is \u201cstill an open question.\u201d One sticking point in conversations with the Yankees has been that their traditional look \u201cis a big part of their branding — but part of Nike\u2019s job is keeping the designs fresh.\u201d Garden on the Yankees said, \u201cI\u2019m hoping to see some flexibility in the future\u201d (ESPN.com, 4\/9<\/a>).<\/p>\n

THE REVIEWS ARE IN: Many outlets gave their thoughts on the eight new City Connect jerseys. Here is a sampling of what is being said:<\/p>\n

— SI\u2019s Tom Dierberger ranked the Braves\u2019 jerseys as the best of this round, writing they \u201ccontinue to have the best City Connect jerseys in all of baseball.\u201d He noted the club \u201cstruck gold again here.\u201d The Brewers ranked last and he wrote the design of the jersey \u201cis fine, actually,\u201d and the \u201cBarrelman on the sleeve is a nice touch.\u201d Dierberger: \u201cBut Wisco? C\u2019mon now. That\u2019s bad\u201d (SI, 4\/9<\/a>).<\/p>\n

— YAHOO SPORTS\u2019 Jack Baer also ranked the Braves as the best jerseys, noting the lower-case \u201ca\u201d hat \u201cis going to sell by the truckload.\u201d The powder blue and throwback \u201cAtlanta\u201d logo \u201cis perfect.\u201d He ranked the Rangers last and wrote they \u201cvery much looks like a generic college uniform overall\u201d (YAHOO SPORTS, 4\/9<\/a>).<\/p>\n

— ESPN\u2019s David Schoenfield gave the Braves his best grade, an A-, and noted the Braves\u2019 original City Connect jersey \u201cwas one of the best, even if it was more of just a throwback rather than a new creation.\u201d This \u201chas a similar approach.\u201d The Rangers and Padres tied for the worst grade with each getting a D. The Rangers\u2019 initial City Connect \u201cwas a hot mess,\u201d as there was \u201ctoo much going on, a gothic \u2018TX\u2019 logo and the \u2018Peagle\u2019 shoulder patch.\u201d The new version \u201cis simpler … and boring.\u201d Meanwhile, the new Padres jersey \u201ckind of feels like a jersey the Marlins might wear.\u201d Schoenfield: \u201cGive me a taco patch, a nod to the San Diego Zoo, a surfing logo, something that connects more immediately to the city\u201d (ESPN.com, 4\/9<\/a>).<\/p>\n

— CBSSPORTS.com\u2019s Matt Snyder gave the Pirates uniforms his top ranking and wrote the way those \u201cPIRATES\u201d letters \u201cjust seem to bleed downward from the chest is great.\u201d He added, \u201cI love the touch of throwing the actual pirate logo with the swords on the hat.\u201d Meanwhile, he has the Brewers last and wrote the jersey does not \u201cfeel like the Brewers.\u201d Snyder: \u201cAnd \u2018Wisco?\u2019 People say that?\u201d (CBSSPORTS.com, 4\/9<\/a>).<\/p>\n

— USA TODAY\u2019s Gabe Lacques also ranked the Pirates jerseys first and wrote they are \u201cdaunting and haunting, from font to cap.\u201d Both the Pirates and Reds \u201cseemed to draw the short straw the first time around, with unimaginative \u2018PGH\u2019 and \u2018CIN\u2019 slapped across the jerseys.\u201d The Pirates \u201cgot better treatment this time around.\u201d He put the Royals on the bottom of his list, writing the team has \u201cgone from a fountain theme to a… fountain theme.\u201d Lacques: \u201cAt first glance, the scheme looks like way too much is going on, though the subtleties pop a little more once you slow everything down\u201d (USA TODAY, 4\/9<\/a>).<\/p>\n

— Several of the ATHLETIC\u2019s MLB writers gave their rankings of the new City Connect jerseys, with Padres and Orioles tying for the best and the Rangers ranking last. Johnny Flores Jr. noted the Orioles jersey \u201cticks all the boxes of what the City Connect initiative can be,\u201d as there are \u201cseveral tributes to Camden Yards\u201d throughout the uniform. C. Trent Rosecrans wrote the green accents on the Orioles jersey \u201cis gorgeous, the hat is elite and the whole Camden Yards motif is spot on.\u201d Flores also noted the Padres have \u201cbeen at the forefront of experimenting with different colors\u201d and they have \u201cknocked it out of the park\u201d with both City Connect editions.
