(ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At Hobart City Mission, retail manager Taryn Townsend says the amount of textile wastage she sees can be overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a bag, we&#8217;d see about 20 per cent is good [and] ready for sale and 80 per cent we&#8217;d either have to rag or [send to] landfill,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While donating clothes to op shops is largely seen as a way to support sustainability, in reality only a fraction of the pre-loved items are rack-ready for sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s over consumption. It&#8217;s low-quality clothing [as a result of] people wanting to change up their styles almost on a daily basis. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p>Minor repairs divert items from landfill<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Claire Dollan, Hobart City Mission&#8217;s project repair lead said donated items were often in too poor a state to sell on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I would say it&#8217;s kind of overwhelming to actually see how much goes in a bin on a daily basis that just cannot be sold or repaired,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s dirty, [there&#8217;s] giant holes in it that \u2026 you couldn&#8217;t even begin to repair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You have that level [and then there are] the ones that are missing a button or they have a little stain on them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A form attached to clothing\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6d9bc33bc9a5e6b04b546009703aade3.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Textiles are triaged by staff and volunteers, who flag what repairs are needed. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Items that cannot be repaired are re-imagined, preventing valuable fibres from being wasted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Silks, woollens, linens \u2026 we don&#8217;t want them to go into the bin,&#8221; Ms Dollan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One example of re-imagined use was silk scarves with holes repurposed into scrunchies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Yassie Samie, a postdoctoral fellow as RMIT&#8217;s school of fashion and textiles, said Australians need to shift their thinking on how to rehome unwanted textiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For about 87 per cent of Australians, when they want to say goodbye to a textile belonging of theirs, the number-one strategy they can think of is to donate it to charity organisations,&#8221; Dr Samie said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Repaired clothing items on a rack\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cc5075e9bd0fbffa3b67aa99322a5188.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Charity Reuse Australia found just 16.5 per cent of donated items could be onsold in opportunity stores. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But for low-quality clothing items, she suggested that commercial recycling options may be more suitable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a vast number of commercial collectors and recyclers who are willing to take those textiles and send it to the recyclers to turn it into fibre or perhaps sometimes turn it into a different type of material altogether,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As well as <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/triplej\/programs\/hack\/recycling-clothes-you-cant-donate\/11005522\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">textile recyclers<\/a>, some fast fashion retailers accept clothing donations instore.<\/p>\n<p>Impact of fast fashion and diversion options<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Samie explained that overconsumption and overproduction were the leading causes of wastage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is simply too much of everything,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Every year, lots of new textile items are imported to the Australian market \u2026 about 1.55 billion new items.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[In fast fashion] the material that is used is often of lower quality and they come with lower prices \u2026 [that] impacts the relationship that we have with our textile belongings and makes it a very disposable sort of product to use.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman hand sewing\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/aa6f55eb510b10a483a334c2d13f6bb5.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Many fast fashion items are not worth the time to repair. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Hobart City Mission&#8217;s repair project offers one solution that it hopes will inspire op shops across the country, and there are plans to create a handbook to support national implementation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[This project] shows that it can be done.
