Ahead of his comeback fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov on Saturday (April 11), the Brit boasts a record of 34 wins, one draw and two defeats from 37 bouts in the paid ranks, with those defeats coming against Ukraine\u2019s Oleksandr Usyk.<\/p>\n
However, before turning professional, Fury was embroiled in a bitter rivalry with Liverpudlian David Price.<\/p>\n
Price beat Fury on his way to an ABA title 20 years ago, before going on to secure a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics. Like the \u2018Gypsy King\u2019, he later turned professional.<\/p>\n
In a recent interview with Sportscasting.com<\/a>, Price discussed his rivalry with Fury, saying: \u201cIt was Tyson Fury\u2019s first senior ABA tournament. I was a Commonwealth Games gold medallist at the time \u2014 this was 20 years ago now. We fought in the North West final, and it was a fascinating occasion. The leisure centre was absolutely packed out, and they actually had to bring our fight forward \u2014 we were due on last as the super-heavyweights, but they moved us to third on the card for safety reasons. There was a big police presence, which was unheard of in amateur boxing. It was crazy.<\/p>\n \u201cI was up for that fight because he\u2019d been talking in the boxing press \u2014 writing letters to Boxing News saying he was going to knock me out, take my Olympic place, and then knock me out again to prove it wasn\u2019t a fluke. In the amateurs, you just don\u2019t get that. So it fired me up, and I thought, \u2018I\u2019m going to have to put this fella in his place.\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cI beat him, and at the time I was honestly relieved, because he\u2019d won a medal at the World Juniors, which is a real achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n After turning professional, the Scouser quickly put together an impressive record of 15 wins from 15 fights between 2009 and 2012, before suffering two consecutive knockout defeats to American Tony Thompson in 2013.<\/p>\n Many suggest those defeats derailed Price\u2019s career, as he had been linked with big-money fights against Derek Chisora and Fury at the time.<\/p>\n Thompson later tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic and masking agent, after the second bout.<\/p>\n Price, now 42, rebuilt his career by putting together a string of victories in fights which took place across Europe before he ran into Erkan Teper, who beat him by second-round knockout in Germany in 2015, handing the Brit his third defeat as a pro.<\/p>\n Teper tested positive for a banned substance before and after the bout, with the EBU stripping him of the European heavyweight title belt and banning him for two years. He also received a one-year ban from the German commission, although the result was upheld.<\/p>\n \u201cI have been cheated, and I deserve something back,\u201d Price said in 2015.<\/p>\n Once again, the Liverpudlian returned with two wins against V\u00e1clav Pejsar and Ivica Perkovi\u0107 before challenging for the WBO European heavyweight title against Christian Hammer in 2017.<\/p>\n Hammer knocked Price out in round seven of the contest in London, which dealt the Englishman a further setback in what was once a promising career.<\/p>\n And despite returning with a win over Kamil Soko\u0142owski later in 2017, Price struggled to realise his full potential, despite appearing on some of the biggest cards of the era.<\/p>\n The 42-year-old took on Russia\u2019s Alexander Povetkin at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff in March 2018 but was knocked out in round five and, in doing so, missed out on winning the WBA Intercontinental and WBO International heavyweight titles.<\/p>\n![\"David](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/aHR0cHM6Ly9ldS1pbWFnZXMuY29udGVudHN0YWNrLmNvbS92My9hc3NldHMvYmx0YTkwZDA1YWQ0MWE1NGE3MS9ibHQ3NDlkZjVl.webp\"\/)
