CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. \u2013 No. 8 Virginia\u00a0(18-4, 11-0 ACC) was too much for Wake Forest (11-12, 3-8 ACC) to overcome on Friday evening. The Deacs were unable to pick up a point against the conference-leading Cavaliers, dropping their record just below .500 with one match remaining in the regular season. Wake Forest will conclude its regular season on Sunday in Blacksburg, as the Deacs take on Virginia Tech in an important match for ACC Championship seeding.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Virginia’s highly ranked doubles teams came out on top to give the Cavaliers the early lead. Singles, however, was more closely contested. A pair of Demon Deacons, Evie Oxford<\/a> and Sankavi Gownder<\/a>, were able to win the opening set in their matches, but were not able to clinch victories due to Virginia securing the win after just three singles matches.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Demon Deacons will take on the Hokies of Virginia Tech on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Deacs have won 10 in a row against Virginia Tech, including a thrilling 4-3 victory in Winston-Salem last season. Nevena Carton<\/a> and Kady Tannenbaum<\/a> were instrumental in that win; they won as a pair in doubles and then won their singles matches to clinch the win. Following the match, both squads will learn where they land in the final ACC standings. While their seed hasn’t yet been determined, the Demon Deacons will be playing on Wednesday, April 15, in Cary.

\n“Congrats to UVA. They are as good as advertised, yet I was really pleased with how we competed. Got beat soundly in doubles but came out and played some good singles. I would have liked to see Evie’s match finish; two of the best freshmen in the conference this year and it was a good 7-6 first set to [Evie]. Proud of our team for showing up every time this year, especially in matches on the road against top teams like this. I’m looking forward to playing Virginia Tech Sunday.”<\/p>\n
