Concession cardholders and pensioners will soon be able to use credit and debit cards on public transport across New South Wales.<\/p>\n

Previously, to claim discounted fares and weekly caps, these cardholders had to use a physical Opal card.<\/p>\n

But a digital upgrade to the system means these passengers can use a credit or debit card, mobile phone, or another digital device on all forms of public transport.<\/p>\n

The change, which will be rolled out gradually from April 16, will benefit nearly 1 million passengers, according to the government.<\/p>\n

“Our modelling suggests the majority of apprentices, university and TAFE students and jobseekers will switch to contactless concessions, which shows the appetite out there for digital payments,” Minister for Transport John Graham said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Data also predicts that between 30 and 40 per cent of seniors and pensioners will go contactless.<\/p>\n

The upgrade, which is part of a major overhaul of the Opal network, has also been spruiked as making it easier for these groups to get free fares once they hit the cap \u2014 a timely saving “as cost-of-living pressures bite hard”.<\/p>\n

It’s exactly six weeks since the conflict began in the MIddle East and data suggests Sydney motorists have changed how they travel.<\/p>\n

For adults, the cap currently sits at $50 a week, while for concessions, children and young people the cap is $25 and for seniors and pensioners, there’s a daily cap of $2.50.<\/p>\n

“The daily and weekly fare caps are a very real saving for passengers on our network,” Mr Graham said.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Steve Whan said the innovation would make a real difference to students and apprentices.<\/p>\n

“When you’re studying, training or starting out in your career, every dollar counts, and this upgrade makes it easier to access the concessions people are entitled to,” Mr Whan said.<\/p>\n
