Day surged with four birdies in a row from holes to 12 to 15 as he and playing partner Young put on a stripe show.<\/p>\n
While they tore up the back nine with the American eventually signing off on a 65, McIlroy stumbled.<\/p>\n
The defending champion\u2019s record six-shot lead from the halfway mark vanished as he carded a one-over par 73.<\/p>\n
The carnage began when McIlroy dumped his approach into the water on 11 and made double bogey.<\/p>\n
The moans, groans and cheers echoed around Augusta National as the course\u2019s famous manual scoreboard were seemingly being updated every few seconds.<\/p>\n
As the chasing pack kept making moves, Day said he could not help but stay across the changes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a bit of a leaderboard watcher,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust trying to get a gauge on where guys are. Obviously I played with Cam Young today, who\u2019s co-leading right now.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust tried to stay, kind of, on par with him even though that was very difficult to do.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe played very lovely from tee to green. Hit a lot of good putts too.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, I mean, I played solid. We\u2019ve got one more day.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m going to do some work on the range, kind of what I did yesterday, and see how we go tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Making Day\u2019s charge all the more impressive was that he tripped up at the very first hole with a bogey.<\/p>\n
From then on, besides another dropped shot at the 16th when he failed to save par from the greenside bunker, Day appeared to be in complete control in more friendly conditions than expected.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, no, it was nice. The first hole is always a tough one,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cCame out of the gates with the greens feeling like they were a little slower than normal. <\/p>\n
\u201cBut I think it brought in a lot of birdie opportunities for a lot of the guys with how receptive the greens were and how playable the greens were.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes they definitely feel like they get out of hand.<\/p>\n
