{"id":601594,"date":"2026-04-12T07:19:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T07:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/601594\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T07:19:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T07:19:18","slug":"floods-damage-to-new-zealands-north-island-as-cyclone-vaianu-makes-landfall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/601594\/","title":{"rendered":"Floods, damage to New Zealand&#8217;s North Island as Cyclone Vaianu makes landfall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Cyclone Vaianu is triggering flooding and strong, damaging winds in parts of New Zealand&#8217;s North Island, as the potentially &#8220;life-threatening&#8221; cyclone makes landfall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">New Zealand&#8217;s weather bureau MetService says the centre of the cyclone is now over the Maketu Peninsula and it will continue to move across the North Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Strong winds are being felt across the region, with gusts over 130 kilometres per hour recorded in some areas, the bureau added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell said the cyclone had moved &#8220;more towards the fringes&#8221; of the North Island, sparing Auckland \u2014 the \u200ccountry&#8217;s most populous city \u2014 from the worst conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We haven&#8217;t quite seen the intensity that we had prepared for or that we thought we were going to get hit with. (Supplied: MetService)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Local authorities have imposed a state of emergency in the most populous regions of the North Island including Tauranga, where two landslides killed eight people in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Residents in Auckland were also issued a flood warning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The weather forecaster warned that Auckland, a city of 1.7 million people, could expect up to 110 millimetres of rain from late Saturday to Sunday afternoon, with &#8220;heavy swells and coastal inundation likely&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Streams and rivers may rise rapidly,&#8221; she told AFP by telephone on Saturday, as the holiday town waited for the storm front to make landfall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said on Friday the cyclone had the potential to be damaging and urged those in its path to prepare for impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Make sure drains are free, check in on the neighbours, and be prepared for possible power cuts,&#8221;
