Android is under attack. Multiple Google warnings<\/a> this year have highlighted a worsening threat landscape and this month\u2019s update is no different. Several exploited chipset flaws are finally fixed, with a \u201ccritical<\/a>\u201d new vulnerability also patched.<\/p>\n This has prompted new media alerts<\/a> that \u201ceveryone using Android must restart their phones now as \u2018critical\u2019 warning issued.\u201d The actual advice is to action a reboot on your phone when you \u201cspot a systems update and install it\u201d to ward off attacks.<\/p>\n In reality, that advice mixes up two separate warnings. You should check if your phone has received and installed the latest Android update<\/a>. According to Samsung, you should \u201crestart your Galaxy phone\u201d today.<\/p>\n \u201cMake restarting your Galaxy phone a daily habit<\/a>,\u201d the company tells all its users. This can \u201cprevent problems with your Galaxy phone,\u201d and \u201cif your phone suddenly freezes or your phone is too slow, try restarting your phone first.\u201d<\/p>\n Doing this daily is not really necessary. Even America\u2019s NSA<\/a> only suggested users \u201cturn devices off and on weekly\u201d to help keep them protected. You can also now do this automatically, with a recommended \u201cauto-optimize daily\u201d option that meets Samsung\u2019s \u201cdaily\u201d advice. It certainly won\u2019t do you or your phone any harm.<\/p>\n In the meantime, the headlines telling you to restart actually mean you should check for an update. If your phone is no longer receiving those updates \u2014 and hundreds of millions are not, then restarting it won\u2019t help.
