Does creatine make you gain weight?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"76\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The most common misconceptions around creatine are that you\u2019ll gain weight, or experience bloating or gut issues. Newsflash: not true. \u2018This stems from the original \u201cbodybuilding\u201d methods of loading creatine and taking 5g, four times per day, with 1g per kg of bodyweight with carbs,\u2019 Dr Sims explains. \u2018This combination creates an increase in cellular hydration (i.e. water retention), which can be associated with weight gain and bloating, but taking this amount (over the recommended dosage) is to blame, and the side effects are proven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/12\/6\/1780\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/12\/6\/1780\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"unfounded in women\" data-node-id=\"76.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unfounded in women<\/a>.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"80\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Strength and conditioning coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andyvincentpt.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.andyvincentpt.com\/about\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Andy Vincent\" data-node-id=\"80.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Andy Vincent<\/a> agrees that how you take the supplement is what will determine whether or not you get on with it: \u2018Creatine doesn\u2019t dissolve in water, which can cause some women to get an upset stomach, but by starting on a low dose, splitting the dose throughout a day or trying buffered forms of creatine, you rule out the risks. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"84\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018Other supposed issues are weight gain and water retention. It\u2019s BS. Vincent sets the record straight: \u2018One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7871530\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7871530\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"94.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> in 2009 documented hair loss due to an increase in the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which could cause hair loss, but this was a study on men and was only done on men who had a specific gene that made baldness more prevalent.
