The pair won the 1997 Drivers\u2019 title together, and Clear followed Villeneuve to the start-up BAR operation when the Canadian made the surprising career switch. Clear continued to engineer Villeneuve until the driver quit BAR-Honda before the final round of 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cI think as a personality he has so much self confidence that puts him in good stead in pretty much most of the situations that he\u2019s been in as a racing driver,\u201d Clear told F1\u2019s Beyond the Grid podcast in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cBut the downside of that is that it did mean he would come up with some pretty weird ideas about why things weren\u2019t going right for him. And then you\u2019d have to say: \u2018maybe you just drove a s*** race, Jacques, have you considered that one?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">In the roundabout way that F1 works sometimes, Clear then ended up as race engineer in 2011 to Michael Schumacher, Villeneuve\u2019s arch nemesis in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Jenson Button and Andrew Shovlin<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\"><a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiamVuc29uX2J1dHRvbuKAmXNfbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL2luZm9ybWF0aW9uL2RyaXZlcnMtaGFsbC1vZi1mYW1lLWplbnNvbi1idXR0b24uM0J1VjdNREU3eWtOQVRoeHhMcjh2VCIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/information\/drivers-hall-of-fame-jenson-button.3BuV7MDE7ykNAThxxLr8vT\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jenson Button\u2019s<\/a> move to BAR in 2003 brought him into a working partnership with Andrew Shovlin, and together they enjoyed the highs of a breakthrough maiden win in 2006, followed by the lows of Honda\u2019s woes in 2007\/08, and the manufacturer\u2019s shock end-of-year withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">But after Ross Brawn resurrected the team the BGP001 proved devastatingly fast out of the blocks, and it was Shovlin who guided Button through a tumultuous 2009 campaign in which Brawn\u2019s early lead \u2013 after Button\u2019s six wins from the first seven races \u2013 was whittled away by rivals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Nevertheless Button held on to claim an emotional title, helped all the way by Shovlin. The two immediately clicked, and Massa\u2019s form improved, leading to breakthrough victories in the closing stages of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">The straight-talking Smedley and Massa had extreme highs and soul-searching lows. That included the agonising late title defeat in 2008, the Brazilian\u2019s horrifying injury mid-2009, and then the team orders saga at Hockenheim in 2010, when Smedley\u2019s \u201cFernando is faster than you, can you confirm you understood that message\u201d was followed by a \u201cgood lad, sorry,\u201d when Massa duly complied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Smedley regarded Massa as akin to a younger brother, which led to some more amusing moments, including the Middlesbrough-born Smedley plainly saying \u201cFelipe baby, stay cool!\u201d when an agitated Massa requested a different visor during Malaysia\u2019s deluge in 2009. Smedley joined Massa at Williams in 2014, albeit this time in charge of trackside operations.<\/p>\n<p>Nico Rosberg and Tony Ross<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\"><a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoibmljb19yb3NiZXJnX2xpbmtfY2xpY2tlZCIsImNsaWNrVGV4dCI6dHJ1ZSwicGF0aCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmZvcm11bGExLmNvbS9lbi9pbmZvcm1hdGlvbi9kcml2ZXJzLWhhbGwtb2YtZmFtZS1uaWNvLXJvc2JlcmcuN3J5em9VWEtyeHFobGNObFhFVWFUZiIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/information\/drivers-hall-of-fame-nico-rosberg.7ryzoUXKrxqhlcNlXEUaTf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nico Rosberg<\/a> stepped up to Formula 1 with Williams in 2006, and after having had spells with Juan Pablo Montoya and Nick Heidfeld, Tony Ross was assigned as engineer to the German youngster. After four seasons Rosberg switched to Mercedes, and Ross stayed on to engineer Rubens Barrichello at Williams, but Rosberg and Jock Clear never gelled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">For 2011 Ross moved across to <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoibWVyY2VkZXNfbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL3RlYW1zL21lcmNlZGVzIiwicGF0aFR5cGUiOiJpbnRlcm5hbCJ9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/teams\/mercedes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercedes<\/a>, reuniting with Rosberg, and the pair remained together until 2016. Ross was perhaps best known for some unusual celebratory messages to Rosberg, and their partnership came to an end in style, with Rosberg retiring from competition just days after his 2016 title triumph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Ross stayed on for a couple of years, engineering Valtteri Bottas, though had to unwind some muscle memory after accidentally calling him \u2018Nico\u2019 over the radio early in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Fernando Alonso and Andrea Stella<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\"><a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiZmVybmFuZG9fYWxvbnNvX2xpbmtfY2xpY2tlZCIsImNsaWNrVGV4dCI6dHJ1ZSwicGF0aCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmZvcm11bGExLmNvbS9lbi9kcml2ZXJzL2Zlcm5hbmRvLWFsb25zbyIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/drivers\/fernando-alonso\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fernando Alonso<\/a> has had a plethora of race engineers during his lengthy career in Formula 1, though the most memorable was surely the alliance with <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiYW5kcmVhX3N0ZWxsYV9saW5rX2NsaWNrZWQiLCJjbGlja1RleHQiOnRydWUsInBhdGgiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5mb3JtdWxhMS5jb20vZW4vbGF0ZXN0L3RhZ3MvYW5kcmVhLXN0ZWxsYS42ZVlsN3lFYkNPOUs2bDZTZTRMSm9HIiwicGF0aFR5cGUiOiJpbnRlcm5hbCJ9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/tags\/andrea-stella.6eYl7yEbCO9K6l6Se4LJoG\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrea Stella<\/a> at Ferrari.
