{"id":602355,"date":"2026-04-12T16:15:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T16:15:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/602355\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T16:15:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T16:15:26","slug":"supercars-says-ryan-wood-inspired-decision-to-add-race-to-christchurch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/602355\/","title":{"rendered":"Supercars says Ryan Wood inspired decision to add race to Christchurch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SUPERCARS supremo Barclay Nettlefold has revealed the decision to put on an extra race in Christchurch in lieu of the cyclone-affected Taup\u014d Super440 was the brainwave of Kiwi star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-2748-Ryan-Wood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Wood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Supercars took a safety-first approach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/supercars-to-cancel-sunday-taupo-action-as-cyclones-nears\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to pre-emptively cancel the Sunday action in Taup\u014d<\/a> as Cyclone Vaianu closed in.<\/p>\n<p>What was not necessarily expected, however, was that Race 10 of the championship won\u2019t be lost altogether \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/christchurch-picks-up-extra-race-for-supercars-debut\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rather it will now be run on Friday April 17 at Ruapuna Raceway<\/a> to kick off what has become a four-race meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWoody talked to Matthew (Carmichael, Supercars communications and public relations director) and said \u2018if you do cancel Sunday, why wouldn\u2019t you bring one forward to Friday in Christchurch and give back to the New Zealand fans that unfortunately missed out?\u2019\u201d Nettlefold told V8 Sleuth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/superstore.v8sleuth.com.au\/products\/gricey-the-story-of-allan-grice-oam-book?utm_source=SRBuyButton&amp;utm_medium=website\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gricey_3b71a7a3-ef0b-44f5-a49f-24fce0d5e25f_1024x1024.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s exactly what Supercars ended up doing, similar to a scenario that played out a few months ago in the Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a situation in TRS where we had to postpone a race and then put it at I think Highlands,\u201d Wood told V8 Sleuth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never want to miss an actual race, so I just mentioned why don\u2019t we do that for Ruapuna if this cyclone does hit?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it was me, but he has run with it. Pic: Mark Walker<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s safety is key, including everyone in Supercars and all our fans and just everyone in New Zealand right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m obviously gutted that we can\u2019t race in front of such passionate people (on Sunday) in Taup\u014d but hopefully there will be plenty down in Christchurch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It only adds to the spectacle that will come with Supercars\u2019 debut on New Zealand\u2019s South Island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have a pretty capacity crowd there.
