A 23-year-old man who allegedly attacked a police officer in the New South Wales Hunter Valley has been granted bail, drawing the ire of the police community.<\/p>\n

On Friday afternoon, police stopped a vehicle in East Maitland for the purposes of random testing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The driver, Timothy Mizzi, returned a negative breath test before allegedly refusing to partake in a random drug test.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Mizzi allegedly attempted to drive away before Senior Constable Thomas Anderson tried to stop him by taking the keys out of the car.<\/p>\n

A scuffle broke out, and police allege the senior constable was attacked, suffering multiple injuries to his face.<\/p>\n

A member of the public stepped in to help, before a taser was deployed and Mr Mizzi was arrested.<\/p>\n

Mr Mizzi was refused bail by police and charged with a number of offences, including assaulting a police officer causing actual bodily harm and using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.<\/p>\n

Following his appearance in court yesterday, Mr Mizzi was granted bail by the judge.<\/p>\n

Police union outraged<\/p>\n

The New South Wales Police Association has voiced dismay over the judge’s decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It doesn’t give us much faith in the justice system at all,” the association’s vice-president Ian Allwood said.<\/p>\n

“The police officer was just doing his job.<\/p>\n

“We’re lucky that the constable didn’t lose an eye.”<\/p>\n

In a statement Police Minister Yasmin Catley described the alleged attack as “vile and cowardly”.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Our police put themselves on the line every day to keep our community safe,” she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“They should never be met with violence for doing their job.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Officer recovering<\/p>\n

The ABC understands Senior Constable Anderson is now recovering after a brief stint in hospital.<\/p>\n

His colleagues have described the early-career police officer as a dedicated and hard-working individual, with a strong passion for the job.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“He’s a really good, steady young fellow and a good police officer and a good man for his community,” Mr Allwood said.<\/p>\n

“He certainly didn’t deserve to be treated like that.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
