Every once in a while, you may find yourself thinking about the 2017\u00a0Power Rangers\u00a0movie<\/a>. What seemed like a not good idea<\/a> on paper ended up being not half bad in execution, mostly thanks to its real-feeling cast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been nearly a decade since the film came out, and Hollywood\u2019s moved on from it. Still, that hasn\u2019t stopped Dacre Montgomery, who played Jason, opining about what could\u2019ve been. While talking to Movieweb<\/a> at the Faces of Death premiere, he revealed that Lionsgate had big hopes for the reboot\u2014enough to offer the cast a four-movie deal. Before it came out, the studio had about seven movies in mind<\/a>, and things were certainly leaning toward more adventures, given a post-credits tease hinted at Tommy Oliver joining the fray.<\/p>\n

For Lionsgate, the plan was for Power Rangers to become the studio\u2019s new Hunger Games as a reliable tentpole IP. But things fell apart after the reboot underperformed: it was a hit for merchandising<\/a> and home release<\/a> at the time, but in theaters, it \u201cdidn\u2019t make enough on the investment that the studio had to continue making more,\u201d Montgomery explained. There was some back and forth over whether a sequel could happen, but in 2019, it was he who revealed plans for another reboot<\/a> without any of the cast returning.<\/p>\n

Flash forward a few years, and now we\u2019re meant to get a reboot for Disney+<\/a>. We\u2019re all waiting to see what comes of that, and you can count Montgomery among them.\u00a0\u201cPower Rangers\u00a0means a great deal to a lot of people,\u201d he said. \u201cI know that whoever steps into those shoes will be great. And I had the best time.\u201d<\/p>\n
