Mr Taylor intends to establish an “Enhanced Screening Coordination Centre” that would have intelligence, screening and enforcement capabilities.<\/p>\n
Its job would be to screen out “terrorist sympathisers and security risks before they come to Australia” by reviewing social media accounts.<\/p>\n
“As part of the enhanced screening process, all visa applicants will be required to provide social media accounts when applying for a visa,” Mr Taylor will say in his speech.<\/p>\n
“The centre will stop radicals, extremists and terrorists from entering our country.”<\/p>\n
The social media checks would be “a standard feature of vetting” rather than a step only taken when deemed necessary.<\/p>\n
‘Booted’ for breaching values<\/p>\n
Some of the elements detailed in Mr Taylor’s plan align closely with a draft policy the Coalition was preparing under the leadership of Sussan Ley<\/a>.<\/p>\n Among them, a promise to make binding a declaration, which visa applicants sign, agreeing to abide by Australian values.<\/p>\n “Our door has also been opened to people who, while rejecting hate and violence, nevertheless still reject our core values,” Mr Taylor will tell the Menzies Research Centre.<\/p>\n The values listed on the Home Affairs website range from respecting individual dignity, and religious freedom, to commitment to the rule of law, and a “fair-go” for all.<\/p>\n People who apply for visas are currently warned that failing to sign the values statement could lead to a delay or refusal of their visa application.<\/p>\n Some details in Mr Taylor’s announcement closely match an immigration policy being drafted before Sussan Ley with ousted as leader.
