Experts say intervention by Canberra may explain why.

It stated climate targets announced by about 130 countries since late 2024 have altered projections for future fossil fuel demand.

It also said as demand from gas-importing countries “plateaus or declines” in the future, global LNG markets will experience structural oversupply after a huge wave of new export capacity — led by the US and Qatar — comes online by 2030.

It warned that most of Australia’s existing long-term LNG export contracts will expire between the mid-2030s and 2040, and when the contracts roll off, Australia’s major gas projects will be exposed to a very different world.

For that reason, the report said, Australia’s existing LNG export contracts may represent the “upper bound” of what our gas exporters can sustainably sell internationally.

“This has broader implications for Australia’s economy,” the report said.

“If export revenues from LNG decline, alongside similar structural pressures on other fossil fuel exports such as coal, Australia’s trade profile could shift materially by the mid-2030s.”

The war-driven energy crisis will hasten the shift

Australia is one of the world’s largest exporters of LNG, accounting for roughly a fifth of global LNG trade. (ABC News: Barrie Pullen)

Australia’s gas dilemma in a transforming global market

The Climate Resources report analysed the long-term outlook for global LNG markets under three different global warming scenarios consistent with warming of 1.6 degrees Celsius, 1.8C and 2C.

It applied a “demand-led” framework to focus on total gas demand in the future.

Government confirms gas reservation plans

Chris Bowen makes a long-anticipated announcement about reserving a portion of gas on the east coast for domestic use after a cabinet meeting.

The key metric used is “uncontracted LNG demand,” which is the portion of LNG demand that isn’t already met by existing contracts: a measure of market opportunity.

It forecasted a global oversupply of gas emerging in the late 2020s as an unprecedented wave of new LNG supply comes online.

And it said in an oversupplied market in the 2030s and 2040s, high-cost suppliers such as Australia will be exposed to a competitive, oversupplied system, where low-cost suppliers are likely to capture the remaining demand.

“Across key Asian markets gas demand generally plateaus or declines under climate-aligned scenarios, limiting LNG import growth beyond the 2030s,” the report said.

“The conditions that supported Australia’s LNG expansion will likely not return.

“In a world aligned with countries fully implementing their current climate commitments, global LNG demand weakens while low-cost supply expands.

“This narrows the market for higher-cost exporters and increases risks of under-utilisation and declining revenues.”

Implications for investors and policymakers

The report calls on Australian policymakers and investors to stress-test LNG investments against demand-constrained scenarios.

It said they should plan for a decline in LNG exports in the future as long-term gas contracts expire, plan to strengthen economic diversification into clean energy industries, and ensure that Australia’s domestic energy policy remains robust.

“Institutional investors have been stress-testing LNG demand scenarios for some time, but analysis like this sharpens the picture,” Francesca Muskovic, executive director of policy at the Investor Group on Climate Change, said.

Loading…

“Investors need to be asking whether new or extended LNG commitments are being assessed against the demand environment that is actually emerging, or the one industry projected a decade ago,” she said.

The report said the analytical community has also routinely underestimated the pace of the renewable energy transition.

“The underlying economics of the energy sector have been transformed. Since 2010, the costs of solar photovoltaic electricity and battery storage have plummeted by roughly 90 per cent,” it said.

“These cost declines have repeatedly outpaced the assumptions built into climate models, which generally underestimated the speed and scale of technology uptake.”

LNG export earnings more sensitive to global price movements in future

On Monday, ANZ’s economic team said since the conflict in the Middle East began in late-February, North Asian LNG spot prices have risen by 80 per cent.

They said those higher LNG prices could add between $10 billion to $12 billion to Australia’s federal budget in 2026-27.

However, they said the volume of Australian LNG exported under long-term contracts will decline out to 2040 as contracts expire, and that suggests that more Australian gas exporters could end up selling LNG at spot prices or under short-term contracts in the future.

“Over the longer term, [gas] export earnings may become more sensitive to global price movements,” they said.

The long-term outlook for Australia’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports is structurally constrained by declining demand, and the…

[4
64,63,294289,6828,19232,161864,44,16795,8146
0":"post-604494","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-australia","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-climate-resource","11":"tag-energy-transition","12":"tag-lng","13":"tag-lng-exports","14":"tag-news","15":"tag-oil-and-gas","16":"tag-renewable-energy
["GET
