(Facebook: Jess Adam)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Grahame Webb, a crocodile expert and conservationist based at Crocydylus Park in Darwin, told 891 ABC Adelaide the images depicted a saltwater crocodile that appeared to be more than 2 metres long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said he had no explanation for the way it had been dismembered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The head&#8217;s been chopped off, and the tail has been chopped off,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a really strange sort of thing \u2026 it&#8217;s just chopped up in pieces.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He pondered whether the reptile, which was not native to SA, had potentially been taken from the top end of Australia and brought south.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve never seen one sort of chopped up like that \u2026 it&#8217;s a bit bizarre,&#8221; Professor Webb said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s illegal, obviously,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Grahame Webb smiles while standing in front of a river.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/de34cb10383936c5fbeba0e49c66a85c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Crocodile expert Grahame Webb says the discovery is bizarre. (ABC News: Tristan Hooft)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The department has asked anyone with information about the unusual find to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000, or by visiting the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/crimestopperssa.com.au\/call-it-out-wildlife-trafficking-campaign\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Call it Out wildlife crime portal<\/a> on the CrimeStoppers website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">According to the department&#8217;s website, crocodiles are generally &#8220;unsuitable&#8221; as pets, with saltwater crocodiles not allowed to be kept under a private permit in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Penalties differ around the country for the incorrect keeping, releasing of unwanted crocodiles or killing the animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2022, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-03-04\/man-fined-after-crocodile-shot-buried-north-queensland\/100883450\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100883450\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Queensland man was fined $3,000 for breaching environmental laws after a 40-year-old saltwater crocodile was found shot and buried on his family&#8217;s cattle property<\/a> in the northern part of the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The decaying reptile&#8217;s carcass was discovered by wildlife officers in a shallow grave on Lochinvar Station in the Burdekin Shire, south of Townsville, in December 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Jamie Kelly pleaded guilty in the Townsville Magistrates Court to a charge of keeping native wildlife reasonably suspected to have been unlawfully taken.
