F1 has dismissed hopes of returning to India in 2027, despite confident assertions from the country’s sports minister that a race would take place at the Buddh International Circuit.<\/p>\n
Mansukh Mandaviya declared publicly that “there will be an F1 race in India in 2027. First race will be at Buddh International Circuit.”<\/p>\n
The Indian sports minister had expressed confidence that ongoing negotiations would resolve the tax complications and bureaucratic hurdles that led to the Indian Grand Prix’s cancellation after 2013.<\/p>\n
“It will take another six months to work out the modalities. The government will help in getting the tax relaxations that had become a bone of contention so that it is a viable venture for the organisers,” he added.<\/p>\n
He revealed that at least three companies have shown interest in operating the circuit, with government support to make the project financially attractive.<\/p>\n
However, in a statement to RacingNews365, a spokesperson for Formula 1 said: “While India is a valuable market for Formula 1’s continued growth with an amazing, passionate fanbase, we won’t be racing there in 2027.<\/p>\n
“Interest in hosting Formula 1 events has never been stronger, and there is a limited number of spaces on the calendar.”<\/p>\n
With a record 24-round calendar and numerous countries vying for hosting rights, securing a slot has become increasingly challenging, and India’s F1 history remains a troubled one.<\/p>\n
The Buddh International Circuit hosted races from 2011 to 2013, but the event was dropped due to financial complications, including disputed tax treatments that made the venture unviable.<\/p>\n
Subsequent attempts to establish other major motorsport events, including MotoGP and Formula E, have also failed to achieve long-term sustainability.<\/p>\n
The Indian market’s potential remains significant, with Formula 1’s popularity surging in recent years. Millions of fans now follow the championship across digital platforms, making India an attractive proposition for future expansion.<\/p>\n
