Details have emerged of the sickening and unusual throat injury to Dylan Lucas that’s set to sideline the Knights forward for at least a month. Lucas and veteran forward Tyson Frizell<\/a> both picked up injuries in a double blow for Newcastle during last week’s loss to the Wests Tigers, but $13 million recruit Dylan Brown<\/a> is set to return for Sunday’s NRL<\/a> clash against the Roosters in a boost for the injury-hit club.<\/p>\n

Lucas has spent the last couple of days in Campbelltown Hospital after it was revealed he suffered multiple cartilage fractures in his throat from an accidental elbow against the Tigers. Incredibly, the Knights second-rower played out the full 80 minutes in a sign of his toughness and dedication to the cause, but he’s now set to be sidelined for between four and six weeks.<\/p>\n

The club confirmed Lucas was set to be released from hospital on Tuesday but the injury is a cruel blow to the classy edge forward, who has been one of Newcastle’s most consistent performers. And it could all but end his hopes of earning selection in Blues coach Laurie Daley’s Origin squad for Game 1 in Sydney on May 27.<\/p>\n

Knights coach Justin Holbrook will also be without Frizell for the next three to four weeks after the former Origin forward suffered a rib injury in the loss to the Tigers. Frizell has been in resurgent form under Holbrook, and ran for 166 metres off the bench in Newcastle’s Round 5 win over Canberra – their fourth of the season.<\/p>\n

The key forwards join an ever-expanding casualty ward at the Knights that includes influential skipper Kalyn Ponga (hamstring) and centre Bradman Best (groin), who are both weeks away from returning to action. And it’s set to pose a stern test of Newcastle’s depth against the star-studded Roosters on Sunday.<\/p>\n

One positive for Holbrook is the expected return of star recruit Brown from a knee injury he picked up in the Round 2 win over Manly. Ponga went down in the same game but the Knights have shown plenty of fight to cement their spot in the top eight without two of their best players.<\/p>\n

The New Zealand Test star is expected to be named on Tuesday afternoon and would appear likely to slot straight back into the halves alongside Fletcher Sharpe. That could push No.7 Sandon Smith to hooker or onto the interchange bench.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, Holbrook could opt to play Smith alongside Brown in the halves and move Sharpe to fullback, with Fletcher Hunt shifting into the centres to cover Best. Thomas Cant would appear the most likely candidate to take Lucas’ starting edge role, with the likes of Pasami Saulo and Cody Hopwood battling for a spot on the Newcastle interchange.<\/p>\n
