I am just grateful for the opportunity to meet them. They were both really nice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Next to Novalie, four-year-old Lily held a hand-drawn sign she had made welcoming the couple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was very excited,\u201d she said, adding it took her \u201cfive or six minutes\u201d to create.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The duke and duchess, who arrived in Melbourne from their home base in Los Angeles hours earlier, visited the adolescent medicine ward and met young people receiving care for acute and chronic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The duke stopped to talk about AFL with 17-year-old cancer patient Hamish, asking which team he followed.<\/p>\n<p>They also joined patients in a therapeutic garden for an activity led by hospital garden therapists, smelling plants and flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/harry-and-meghan-australia-visit-live-updates-duke-and-duchess-of-sussex-touch-down-in-melbourne-20260413-p5zni6.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, at the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital. \" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/59a11f55a4d78bf4737800d22f116e5011c8da84c850d900202d54b84caed732.gif\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Opened by Queen Elizabeth II and later visited by Harry\u2019s parents, King Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, the hospital has long been a fixture of royal tours, a role it reprised on Tuesday, even though the couple are visiting Australia in a private capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the hospital, however, the distinction didn\u2019t matter as children and families relished the brief distraction from treatment for a chance to see the fifth in line to the British throne and his former actress wife.<\/p>\n<p>Parents described the visit as a welcome break from routine. Courtney, who had travelled from Koo Wee Rup with her 11-year-old son Archer for an appointment, said it offered \u201ca bit of excitement for the day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Alana Higgins, 22, met Queen Elizabeth II at the same hospital more than a decade ago and was given the chance to tell the duke about her encounter with his late grandmother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like a full circle moment,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s really special. The duchess\u2019 pregnancy was announced shortly after their arrival, further fuelling interest.<\/p>\n<p>By 2020, the pair had stepped back from royal duties \u2013 a move widely dubbed at \u201cMegxit\u201d \u2013 and now live in California, where they pursue a mix of charitable work, advocacy and commercial projects.<\/p>\n<p>This time around, their quasi-royal tour will span Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney, pairing visits to charities focused on mental health, community resilience and veterans with private engagements and paid appearances.<\/p>\n<p>After their hospital visit, the duchess visited a women\u2019s refuge in Melbourne\u2019s west, where she donned an apron and served frittata to people at the centre run by McAuley Community Services, which provide crisis accommodation for women and their children, before joining them for lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Later on, the couple travelled to the Australian National Veterans Arts Museum, an organisation supporting current and former members of the defence force and their families.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Prince Harry will attend a Movember event at the Whitten Oval with players from the Western Bulldogs, before flying to Canberra for events at the Australian War Memorial.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the week, the duke will be the keynote speaker at a mental health summit in Melbourne, where tickets are priced at up to $2400.
