{"id":606475,"date":"2026-04-14T15:20:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T15:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/606475\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T15:20:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T15:20:12","slug":"tributes-flow-for-sa-disability-advocate-ellen-fraser-barbour-after-drowning-near-alice-springs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/606475\/","title":{"rendered":"Tributes flow for SA disability advocate Ellen Fraser-Barbour after drowning near Alice Springs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">South Australian disability advocate Ellen Fraser-Barbour is being remembered for being &#8220;a fierce and defiant force&#8221; who will leave a &#8220;long-lasting legacy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Fraser-Barbour drowned at Ellery Creek Big Hole, an hour west of Alice Springs, despite bystanders and paramedics trying to resuscitate her on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The deafblind and autistic 35-year-old was known as a passionate disability advocate who loved travelling and hiking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Fraser-Barbour&#8217;s sister Harriet shared the impact on her family and the community in a statement to the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Ellen was a fierce and defiant force who made a lasting impact on all that she encountered,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We cannot describe the hole she will leave in our family and will missed greatly by her community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;She was an amazing friend to many and wise beyond her years with so much left to give.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Ellen helped to shape so much of who I am today and I will not be the same without her.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two smiling, dark-haired women, one with facial difference, in front of a disability strategy backdrop.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/51bab3e42bfbbdd826281c0bb2d152e7.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sam Paior said she and Ellen Fraser-Barbour discussed issues that really mattered. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Sam Paior, founder of disability advocacy service The Growing Space, said she first met Dr Fraser-Barbour when she was 19 years old, when the latter applied to volunteer for SA&#8217;s Dignity for Disability Party in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Just before COVID and all through COVID we spent a lot of time together, when we started hiking together on the trails,&#8221; Ms Paior said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t think that there&#8217;s almost any area of disability related advocacy that Ellen hasn&#8217;t touched and had a positive influence, with incredible power, in our state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think the world could ever know an advocate that worked quite in the way she did. She was extraordinary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Fraser-Barbour received her PhD from Flinders University in 2024. Ms Paoir said her research sought to improve safety and respect for people living in group home arrangements by centring their voices and experiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She also shared <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-08-11\/we-need-to-talk-about-ableism\/12525078\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/12525078\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">her experience with ableism with the ABC<\/a> and appeared on the ABC&#8217;s <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/iview.abc.net.au\/show\/you-can-t-ask-that\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">You Can&#8217;t Ask That<\/a> program, speaking about her lived experience with facial difference.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-08-11\/we-need-to-talk-about-ableism\/12525078\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We need to talk about ableism<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">People who easily name racism and sexism do not seem to see the human rights issues that underscore ableism. So that silence is problematic, Ellen Fraser-Barbour writes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Fraser-Barbour was a policy and research leader with advocacy group JFA Purple Orange.
