As Rosie McIlroy stood on the edge of the 18th green watching her son etch his name into the history books, a purse lay at her feet – it was created from newspaper articles featuring images of him dropping to his knees following last year’s long-awaited Masters triumph.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Rosie was enshrined into Masters history herself when she and her husband, Gerry, embraced Rory McIlroy<\/a> following his historic second victory at Augusta National.<\/p>\n

The emotional scenes, also encompassing McIlroy’s daughter, Poppy, and wife Erica, will be engrained into the memory of the golf world for years to come, immortalizing the latest chapter of his legacy. Yet, it almost didn’t happen.<\/p>\n

McIlroy shared that he had to persuade his parents into coming to Augusta National this week. It was unfathomable – that they would be willing to skip another Masters victory after missing out on his maiden triumph last year.<\/p>\n

Yet, it was the greatest testament to their support of their son and their will to see him succeed no matter the cost.<\/p>\n

Gerry and Rosie were willing to stay away from Augusta, willing to miss out on witnessing one of the greatest moments of their son’s career, all for his sake.<\/p>\n

Rosie’s bag appeared to be made out of a newspaper article from last year which announced McIlroy’s career grand slam after his 2025 victory at Augusta<\/p>\n

It was a superstition, you see. They believed the reason he won last year, finally ridding himself of the ghosts of Masters past, was because they weren’t there. Therefore, they could hardly bare cursing their only child’s date with destiny.<\/p>\n

But that’s not out of the ordinary. McIlroy’s parents have always made sacrifices to help their son succeed.<\/p>\n

Both Gerry, 66, and Rosie, 65, have previously revealed the challenges they faced in funding and nurturing the talent of their remarkable son in the early years: from 100-hour working weeks to taking on three jobs, and now, even being willing to miss out on reaping the rewards.<\/p>\n

‘I’d work from 8am to noon as a cleaner at a sports club,’ Gerry previously told the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n

‘From 12 to 6pm I was a bartender at Holywood Golf Club. Then, after going home for tea, I’d return to the sports club from 7pm to midnight to work behind the bar.<\/p>\n

‘I am a working-class man and that’s all I knew to get the money we needed for Rory to be able to learn and compete at golf.<\/p>\n

‘Sometimes, you might get a bit browned off or tired, but Rosie would always cheer me up. “Gerry,” she’d say, “one day this could be all worthwhile.”‘<\/p>\n

Despite their ferocious work ethic, it was not pushy parenting that forced McIlroy into the big time – all the ambition came from the youngster himself.<\/p>\n

‘We wanted to give our child a chance – after all, he was the only one we have. But I want to make it clear: golf was not our dream, it was Rory’s,’ Gerry said.<\/p>\n

McIlroy has said his parents were often ships in the night given their many jobs and anti-social hours, with Rosie working the graveyard shifts in a local factory.<\/p>\n

The family did not take a holiday for more than a decade, using every penny toward their son’s travel costs, equipment and training.<\/p>\n

‘He was around eight at the time,’\u00a0Rosie said reflecting on those times in the decent Amazon Prime documentary dissecting McIlroy’s long-awaited Masters victory last year. ‘Gerry took him everywhere around Ireland, playing in tournaments.<\/p>\n

‘People were approaching us saying, “Oh, we run a tournament, do you want to come to our tournament?” I worked all night, and Gerry worked all day, and that’s how we funded it.’<\/p>\n

Of their decision to take on opposing work shifts, Gerry said that Rosie had told him: ‘Gerry, this is the God’s truth. You say we don’t make an effort, we’re never going to know.’<\/p>\n

Now, they do know. Now, they have seen their effort – along with their faith and support – has paid off in spades.<\/p>\n

And McIlroy has paid them back in kind. He won his first major championship at Congressional Country Club at the 2011 US Open. Last year, he won his fifth, completing the career grand slam.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, he won his sixth. Becoming the first player since Tiger Woods in 2002 to go back-to-back at the Masters – the one major that had eluded him for so long.<\/p>\n

And his parents’ sacrifices weren’t lost on McIlroy as he choked up while sitting in Butler Cabin in a green jacket for a second-straight year.<\/p>\n

‘I’m so glad that they got to experience this today,’ he said. ‘We’re all going to have a great time tonight.<\/p>\n

‘I was a little kid with a dream, and the support that I have from my family, my friends, everyone back home…<\/p>\n

‘Some people probably thought it was outlandish to dream the things that I wanted to do. But I had amazing support from back home, and can’t thank them all enough for that continued support.<\/p>\n
