(ABC News: James Maasdorp)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Latitude, which is the largest non-bank consumer finance company in Australia, was forced to pay a $1.5 million fine for similar breaches in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Authority member Samantha Yorke said there was no excuse for Latitude&#8217;s repeated compliance failures, as reflected by the scale of the latest fine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Latitude is now a two-time offender and it is disappointing that it let consumers down again,&#8221;  Ms Yorke said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The spam laws have been in place for more than 20 years, and there is simply no excuse for ongoing non-compliance, particularly after a prior enforcement action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The messages, which promoted Latitude credit card products and financial services, told recipients they could reply &#8220;STOP&#8221; to unsubscribe, however in many circumstances the function simply did not work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Under Australian law, consumers must have the option to unsubscribe from commercial messaging, which must also provide accurate contact information for the sender.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The exterior of a city office building.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/bf32d75effa35970796366192417aee4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The penalty was issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
