Australia\u2019s Oscar Piastri played a big role in F1\u2019s return to the iconic Nurburgring, but an issue cut it short.<\/p>\n

Piastri and Mercedes driver George Russell took part in a Pirelli tyre test on the 5.14km circuit last used by F1 in 2020.<\/p>\n

The session was focused on developing the intermediate and C3 compounds for the 2027 season.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, a technical issue on the MCL40 restricted the Australian\u2019s day as he only managed 65 laps, while Russell enjoyed 127.<\/p>\n

The Brit was also significantly faster as a result, posting a 1:33.899, while Piastri managed a 1:35.096.<\/p>\n

Piastri admitted little could be translated from the test to racing this year, but given he missed out on two of the three races this year with the new regulations, it is a good boost in what is now a month without F1.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is useful,\u201d Piastri told Sky Sports F1.<\/p>\n

\u201cA race weekend is always more useful and here is a circuit we do not race at so with the current regulations, there is a lot of preparation that is specific to each circuit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are some things we can learn here, but it is not quite the same as a race weekend, but better than nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is more about getting laps in the car and checking our systems are working.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot change anything with this test with Pirelli.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is about small things like systems and comfort with the seat, making sure it is as good as possible because you never want to change those things during a race weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is still useful and for me you get a feel for the car.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have only done three race weekends and in my case only one full race, so any laps at this point is useful.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the tyres themselves, Piastri did not give away too much.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of them have been a bit different,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am sure there will be different tests of different versions throughout the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are trying to make as good of product as we can and some of the things were interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The modern version of the Nurburgring, which was shortened from the iconic \u201cGreen Hell\u201d marathon layout has a special place in Australian history.<\/p>\n

It was the scene of Mark Webber\u2019s famous first F1 win for Red Bull in 2009 when he overcame a drive through penalty to take a 9s glory.<\/p>\n

The track has not hosted the German Grand Prix since 2013, and hosted the one-off Eifel Grand Prix during the COVID 2020 season.<\/p>\n

While his manager Webber enjoyed the breakthrough success at the Nurburgring, Piastri has not had the chance to replicate those feats as it has not been on the F1 calendar recently.<\/p>\n

He did race there in 2019 during his Formula Renault Eurocup campaign and enjoyed great success, sweeping the entire weekend on his way to championship glory.<\/p>\n

Piastri enjoyed the \u201cold school\u201d nature of the German track.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is cool,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have not been here for a long time. 2019 was the last time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an old school track. There are big bumps in some places and the kerbs are very unique. \u201cEspecially the exit kerbs and there is no margin for error with grass and gravel everywhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe layout is very challenging, and for an F1 car it feels small compared to some of the tracks we race on now.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not my favourite track ever, but its a really cool place in terms of unique it is and the history.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always enjoy that as drivers and it is always more rewarding being.\u201d<\/p>\n

F1 returns with the Miami Grand Prix in May.<\/p>\n
