KUALA LUMPUR: Another Malay\u00adsian has made the nation proud by being involved in future aircraft research with the Ame\u00adrican space agency Nasa and a premier university.<\/p>\n
Dr Raja Akif Raja Zahirudin, 33, who currently serves as a Post\u00addoc\u00adtoral Fellow at the Daniel Guggen\u00adheim School of Aerospace Engi\u00adneering, Georgia Tech, is direct\u00adly involved in the United States\u2019 Natio\u00adnal Aeronautics and Space Administration Nasa Raven-\u00adGT (Research Aircraft for eVTOL Ena\u00adbling Technologies) project.<\/p>\n
The project focuses on research into electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, a future aviation technology involving \u00adelec\u00adtric, powered aircraft that operate like conventional planes but can take off and land vertically.<\/p>\n
Sharing his experience with Bernama, the Kerteh-born scientist said his research, titled \u2018Pro\u00adprotor Hover Performance and Wing Download for the Raven eVTOL Aircraft\u2019, focuses on rotor performance and the interaction of aircraft components that affect thrust during take-off and landing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis study aims to improve eVTOL design to make it more efficient and suitable for future operations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Raja Akif said eVTOL technology has the potential to become an alternative to existing transportation systems, as it offers faster, quieter and more environmentally friendly short-distance air tra\u00advel, particularly in congested urban areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the main challenges in developing eVTOL aircraft is ensuring low noise levels and energy efficiency, as public accep\u00adtance, especially in densely-populated areas, depends heavily on these factors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The project, which began in 2020, involves four researchers, four academic faculty members and seven students at Georgia Tech, along with collaboration from industry partners and other researchers.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on his involvement with Nasa research, Raja Akif said it all began during his PhD studies at Pennsylvania State University, where he had the opportunity to be mentored by Prof Eric Green\u00adwood, who previously served at Nasa\u2019s Langley Research Centre.<\/p>\n
