{"id":608052,"date":"2026-04-15T08:18:56","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T08:18:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/608052\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T08:18:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T08:18:56","slug":"top-u17-talent-out-to-prove-themselves-with-world-cup-selection-looming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/608052\/","title":{"rendered":"Top U17 talent out to prove themselves with World Cup selection looming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The nation&#8217;s top U18 athletes are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.australia.basketball\/news\/4487206\/live-foot-locker-u18-national-championships-in-moreton-bay\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">battling it out in Moreton Bay<\/a>, Queensland with heightened stakes on the line fighting for a spot in the Australian Crocs and Sapphires U17 World Cup squads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiba.basketball\/en\/events\/fiba-u17-basketball-world-cup-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U17 Men\u2019s Basketball World Cup<\/a>\u00a0will be hosted in Istanbul,\u00a0T\u00fcrkiye\u00a0from 27 June to 5 July, whilst the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiba.basketball\/en\/events\/fiba-u17-womens-basketball-world-cup-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U17 Women\u2019s Basketball World Cup<\/a>\u00a0is set for Brno, Czech Republic from 11 to 19 July.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>U17 Crocs\u2019 Head Coach\u00a0Greg Vanderjagt\u00a0underlined the importance of the event, describing it as \u201ca critical pathway for identifying talent for the U17 World Cup squads.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the country\u2019s best prospects set to\u00a0showcase\u00a0their talents in Queensland, it becomes a rare chance for direct comparison, as he added, \u201cIt gathers the country\u2019s top young players in one competitive environment, allowing selectors to evaluate skill, athleticism and basketball IQ head-to-head\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStandout showings here can rapidly elevate a player\u2019s standing in selection conversations,\u201d said\u00a0Vanderjagt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        Coach Greg Vanderjagt at the Oceania Championships (c) FIBA<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Vanderjagt asserts that the tournament\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0only about individual brilliance but impact on team performance as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to see more than just the most individually talented\u00a0athletes.
