{"id":608123,"date":"2026-04-15T09:10:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T09:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/608123\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T09:10:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T09:10:10","slug":"4-vaccine-trends-this-influenza-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/608123\/","title":{"rendered":"4 vaccine trends this influenza season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        <a href=\"https:\/\/www.australianpharmacist.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/04\/Untitled-design-63.jpg\" data-caption=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"396\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Untitled-design-63-696x396.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Untitled design (63)\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p> New strains, updated recommendations and funding changes require pharmacists to stay vigilant this season.<\/p>\n<p>Flu season is underway and it\u2019s already taking a toll, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/health\/causes-death\/deaths-due-acute-respiratory-infections-australia\/latest-release\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">112 influenza-related deaths recorded this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There were <a href=\"https:\/\/nindss.health.gov.au\/pbi-dashboard\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">25,430 recorded cases<\/a> of influenza in the first quarter of 2026 \u2013 following a whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/nindss.health.gov.au\/pbi-dashboard\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">48,641<\/a> cases in Q1 2025, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/health\/causes-death\/deaths-due-acute-respiratory-infections-australia\/latest-release\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1738 deaths caused by influenza<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.racgp.org.au\/gp-news\/media-releases\/2026-media-releases\/march-2026\/25-000-flu-cases-by-march-means-it-s-time-to-vacci\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> \u2018worst flu year on record\u2019<\/a>, patients have been urged to prioritise receiving their flu shot in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccination urgency is particularly pertinent this season due to new circulating strains, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csiro.au\/en\/news\/All\/Articles\/2026\/January\/Super-K\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Subclade K, a branch of the H3N2 influenza family,<\/a> which is spreading much earlier\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0and faster \u2013 in the flu season.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what pharmacists need to know about the 2026 influenza season.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been a slow start to flu vaccine uptake<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s early in the 2026 flu vaccine rollout, coverage is concerningly low in certain priority groups \u2013 with some jurisdictions faring worse than others.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccination rates are highest in older Australians aged 75 years and over, with national coverage sitting at 11.7%. But young children aged 2\u20134 years, who are at risk of severe complications, hospitalisation and death from influenza, have some of the lowest vaccination rates in the country (1.4%). And in South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania, vaccine coverage in this age cohort is less than 1%.<\/p>\n<p>Among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 2\u20134, the national vaccine average sits below 1%.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not just to protect grandkids: ATAGI warns of pertussis in older adults<\/p>\n<p>Recent guidance from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/committees-and-groups\/atagi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI)<\/a> reminds health professionals that <a href=\"https:\/\/immunisationhandbook.health.gov.au\/contents\/vaccine-preventable-diseases\/pertussis-whooping-cough\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pertussis<\/a> is not confined to childhood, with cases increasing among adults in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Older adults and individuals with chronic illnesses have higher pertussis morbidity and mortality rates in comparison to healthy adults.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While not NIP-funded, ATAGI and the Australian Immunisation Handbook recommends adults &gt;65 receive a dose of dTpa every 10 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When administering other vaccines such as influenza COVID-19 to patients in the age cohort, pharmacists should either inquire when they had their last dTpa vaccine or check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/australian-immunisation-register\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Immunisation Register.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pertussis-containing vaccines can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.nsw.gov.au\/immunisation\/Pages\/seasonal-flu-vaccination-faqs.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">safely co-administered with the influenza or COVID-19 vaccine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to accurately record funding source<\/p>\n<p>Along with funded flu vaccines under the National Immunisation Program, various state-based programs funded vaccines have also been announced \u2013\u00a0so pharmacists must ensure they are using the correct stock and claiming process via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppaonline.com.au\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pharmacy Programs Administrator<\/a> (PPA).<\/p>\n<p>Various<a href=\"https:\/\/ncirs.org.au\/influenza\/state-and-territory-funding-intranasal-flu-vaccine-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> funded state and territory flu vaccination <\/a>programs include:<\/p>\n<p>Queensland: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.qld.gov.au\/clinical-practice\/guidelines-procedures\/diseases-infection\/immunisation\/schedule\/2026-queensland-nasal-spray-flu-immunisation-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">funded intranasal flu vaccine<\/a> for children aged 2\u20135 years, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.qld.gov.au\/clinical-practice\/guidelines-procedures\/diseases-infection\/immunisation\/schedule\/2026-free-flu-vaccination-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">broader free flu program<\/a> for Australians aged 6 months and older.<br \/>\nWestern Australia: funded intranasal flu vaccine for children aged 2-11 years, plus a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.wa.gov.au\/articles\/f_i\/influenza-immunisation-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">free state program<\/a> for people aged 12\u201364 years who are not otherwise eligible under the NIP from 1 May to 30 June 2026.<br \/>\nNew South Wales: funded intranasal flu vaccine for children aged 2 to under 5 years.<br \/>\nSouth Australia: funded intranasal flu vaccine for children aged 2 to under 5 years.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to selecting the correct stock for each corresponding program, accurate claiming for administration fees is essential. Incorrect claims through (PPA) can result in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppaonline.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/PPA-Audit-and-Monitoring-Factsheet.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stock discrepancies, audit and compliance issues.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Medadvisor <a href=\"https:\/\/support.medadvisor.com.au\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/34767319025433-National-Immunisation-Program-Vaccinations-in-Pharmacy-NIPVIP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recently updated their guidance<\/a> for recording of funding sources in clinical recording systems \u2013 any vaccines administered under state-funded programs should be recorded as \u2018other\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Funded FluMist vaccines now available in WA<\/p>\n<p>The Western Australian government has announced that children aged 2\u201311 years can now access FluMist, the intranasal influenza vaccine, through their local pharmacy as part of the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wa.gov.au\/government\/media-statements\/Cook%20Labor%20Government\/Comprehensive-plan-for-Western-Australians%27-healthcare-this-winter-20260224\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2026 WA Winter Strategy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>PSA is urging parents to protect their kids against influenza, with the needle-free influenza vaccine providing another vaccination option.<\/p>\n<p>There are 130,000 doses available across WA, which is anticipated to increase influenza vaccination rates among young children.<\/p>\n<p>PSA WA Branch President, Kristian Ray MPS, said that \u2018Giving parents and patients the choice to receive a cost-free, needle-free vaccination through community pharmacies will make it easier for families to protect their children ahead of flu season.\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New strains, updated recommendations and funding changes require pharmacists to stay vigilant this season.
