This rhythm\u2014found in everything from cricket chirps to pop music\u2014likely evolved because it matches the natural processing speed of animal brains, making communication more efficient<\/p>\n<p>Published in <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosbiology\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pbio.3003735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">PLOS Biology on April 14, 2026, the study suggests that a \u201cuniversal tempo\u201d<\/a> exists across the animal kingdom. From the flashing of fireflies to the chirping of crickets and even the beat of Taylor Swift songs, communication signals tend to repeat at a rhythm of approximately 2 hertz (two beats per second). Researchers believe this shared tempo isn\u2019t a coincidence, but rather a biological \u201csweet spot\u201d tailored to how brains process information.<\/p>\n<p>The 2 Hz \u201csweet spot\u201d and a universal rhythm<\/p>\n<p>The discovery began when researcher Guy Amichay noticed that fireflies in Thailand seemed to blink in time with the chirping of nearby crickets. While the two species weren\u2019t intentionally synchronising, they were both naturally gravitating toward a tempo of 2 to 3 hertz.<\/p>\n<p>The research team analysed a vast array of species\u2014including fish, birds, frogs, and mammals\u2014and found that despite differences in size and habitat, their rhythmic signals (sound, light, or movement) almost always fell within a narrow band of 0.5 to 4 hertz.<\/p>\n<p>The brain-resonance hypothesis<\/p>\n<p>Physically, animals are capable of signalling much faster. For instance, a panicked firefly can flicker at a significantly higher rate. However, for standard communication, they stick to the 2 Hz range. The researchers propose that this tempo exists because it resonates with the receiver\u2019s brain.<\/p>\n<p>The biophysics of a single neuron provides the explanation:<\/p>\n<p>Integration time:<\/p>\n<p>Neurons need time to \u201creset\u201d and integrate information before firing again.<\/p>\n<p>Neural tuning:<\/p>\n<p>Computer models of neural circuits show they respond most strongly to signals arriving every few hundred milliseconds.<\/p>\n<p>Efficient attention:<\/p>\n<p>The 2 Hz rhythm acts as a \u201ccarrier signal.\u201d Much like a metronome, it grabs the listener\u2019s attention, allowing the actual information (the \u201cnotes\u201d) to be layered on top of the beat.<\/p>\n<p>Biological wavelength: A universal rhythm<\/p>\n<p>This rhythm isn\u2019t just for insects; it appears to be hardwired into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessgovernment.org\/neuroscientists-confirm-number-sense-in-rats-promoting-human-brain-research\/176334\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">human culture<\/a> as well. Musicologists have long noted that popular music frequently clusters around 120 beats per minute, which is exactly 2 hertz. This matches the natural rhythm of human walking and limb movement, making it the most intuitive tempo for dancing and speech cadence.<\/p>\n<p>This finding suggests that our preference for certain musical beats and the way we speak may be rooted in the same ancient neural timing principles used by fireflies and frogs.
