{"id":608702,"date":"2026-04-15T15:13:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T15:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/608702\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T15:13:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T15:13:20","slug":"fossil-fuels-face-higher-taxes-than-electricity-under-looming-bill-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/608702\/","title":{"rendered":"Fossil fuels face higher taxes than electricity under looming bill \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Solidarity tax<\/p>\n<p>Austria, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain have also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/austria-germany-italy-portugal-spain-tax-energy-companies-benefit-iran-war\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called<\/a> on the Commission to propose a temporary tax on the windfall profits that some energy companies are making on the back of the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinding a European solution is the right approach,\u201d the countries&#8217; finance ministers wrote in a letter. \u201cIt would make it possible to finance temporary relief, especially for consumers, and curb rising inflation, without placing additional burdens on public budgets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indebted governments, such as Italy, are under particular pressure. They&#8217;re struggling to find spare cash in the public purse to cushion the impact of the crisis, which is set to weigh on EU growth and push prices higher \u2014 a dreaded economic cocktail called <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/215719\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stagflation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A windfall tax would be easier to introduce under the EU&#8217;s emergency rules, which would only require a qualified majority to agree on the temporary measure.
