(Supplied: Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation)<\/p>\n<p>From steady decline to future plans<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australia was not always so exposed to the global market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some supply came from a facility at Gibson Island near Brisbane, Queensland, but it ceased manufacturing urea in early 2023 after more than 50 years of operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It cited the cost of natural gas as the reason for closing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-26\/aus-vegetable-growers-stop-planting-middle-east-conflict\/106497508\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vegetable growers won&#8217;t plant more crops if costs keep rising<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A snap survey by AUSVEG reveals 27 per cent of Australian vegetable growers have already reduced planting, while some will not harvest current crops because rising costs make it unviable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Fertilizer Australia chief executive Stephen Annells said domestic manufacturing had declined over the past two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The issues that we see are industrial relations, environmental laws, cost of energy is a massive one,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Fertilisers are made up of different bases depending on soil needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Nitrogen fertilisers are mostly used in Australia, made from urea which is produced using natural gas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In this situation, the cost of gas to Australians is prohibitive,&#8221; Mr Annells said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The industry was declining, but not dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2017, Perth-based Perdaman Industries announced plans to build a new plant in Karratha in Western Australia, to produce 2.3 million tonnes of urea each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal government has invested $490 million through the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility and the Export Finance Australia facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Perdaman Industries founder Vikas Rambal recently told Australian media the plant could be finished by January 2027, four months earlier than expected, with an additional $200 million government investment and expedited visas for up to 400 specialist workers from India.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In response, Federal Minister for Industry Tim Ayres said the government would work carefully with the proponents to see what more could be done to bring forward production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This development in Western Australia in 2027 will mean we have onshore domestic urea production,&#8221; Mr Ayres said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is a vital economic resilience measure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said the federal government was exploring ways to reduce the cost of gas, including a gas reservation scheme and intervening in the market.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A canola field fenced next to a dirt road. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776270373_396_1d55aaba533a5eb41470f40f51eb8771.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Susy Cornford says growers should have enough fertiliser for winter crop planting. (ABC South East SA: Elsie Adamo)<\/p>\n<p>Ships on the way<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australia imported about 3.8 million tonnes of urea in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Farmers apply the product to paddocks ahead of planting and then again a few months later as a top dressing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Argus Media fertiliser market reporter Susy Cornford said the peak season ran from March to July, and while growers had enough urea for the first application, supply would be tight for the second.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Cornford said the price of urea had increased by about 60 per cent since the Iran war broke out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But with supply still so low, she said it was creating &#8220;demand destruction&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When the prices are so high and there&#8217;s so little supply that there can&#8217;t be any demand,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But I think that if there is supply, it will be bought.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man holding fertiliser pellets.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/74e4e87eee6c6067866f0479ea2f4c12.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australia imports the bulk of its phosphorous fertiliser supply. (ABC Rural: Bridget Herrmann)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Argus Media&#8217;s latest fertiliser report shows 235,000 tonnes of urea is in transit to Australia across nine vessels, with another 225,000 tonnes of phosphorous fertilisers also on board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the meantime, farmers are being urged to consider alternatives, though some are already calling for consumers to help foot the bill for rising costs.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond urea<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While urea-based fertiliser makes up the bulk used by Australian farmers, phosphate fertilisers are also widely used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Annells said Australia had one of the biggest deposits of phosphate in the world in the Georgina basin in north-west Queensland that spanned into the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A map showing the Georgina Basin encompassing parts of the NT and north-west Queensland\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ec639601f90c80b9de6a8bb0ab32e4ea.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">About 90 per cent of Australia&#8217;s phosphate deposits are in the Georgina Basin.
